Is that intended?

Yes, the "TTY login" is intended to give you a console, not an X session.
To get a graphical session you can either run 'startx' or reboot and choose the regular entry.

But I don't want to have syslog outputs disturb my typing. They show up in the console session.

I don't know what that would be. I never see unwanted output in my TTY sessions. Can you post an example of what you get?
