keyboard layout

I can not seem to get the special character correct when choosing . A keyboard lay out
sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

I have tried all of them none can get the special charters right .

I am a canadian  and have tried all french and English also tried us .

I have other computers with Debian on them and the key are correct can I copy their maps to this one

any Ideas

You need to know what keyboard layout your actual hardware needs, so copying another machine's keymap will not necessarily help. Have you run any other systems on the same machine and successfully identified the layout? Can you try running a live session of something like Ubuntu to see if it detects your keyboard?

Other possibility - are the special characters you want available on your physical keyboard anyway?
