Quick note from 2023: I sometimes hit this same dark-screen issue with a newer BL on a laptop. It might be a lightdm issue.

A workaround that sometimes helps - apart from just blindly typing the password - is to use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to switch to a TTY, login there, then go back to the graphics desktop with Ctrl+Alt+F7.

If that doesn't work, you can also try 'startx' on the TTY desktop.
