Had another freeze-up today when in Exton MX and trying to play a game called Swell Foop (not exactly the last word in gaming, but it passes the time and provides a challenge of sorts). Maybe it's time to get this computer checked over and possibly get a new (or "new" refurbished) one.

So it seems it's the DE that may be causing the freeze-ups and did you get any when using a tiling WM like Spectrwm?
What about kernels?

It was only supposed to be temporary until I got the money together for a newer one, but I've had it over two years now.
There is nothing so permanent as a temporary fix.

Good point. I haven't tried it with a tiling WM yet but for me most of the point of MX (especially MX Exton) is its prettiness; it's a very visually appealing distro. Switching to a tiling WM would lose that (or at least it would take a lot of setting up to get it to look that way). Nevertheless, I will take your advice and try it with a tiling WM to see what happens.
I don't know about the kernel either, maybe I should look into it.

I've now tried it with i3, and Swell Foop works OK with it but Osmo (my calendar app) still freezes unfortunately.
