And will it stop at the UK?
There is a take on this that it's a deliberate attempt to wipe out small independent web projects.
I guess that could ultimately mean the end of FOSS?
When the Big Boys twig that they won't get any more free Linux there might be a rethink...

Oh man, that sucked initially. However, it only took an hour or two to see that not only was the reviewer correct in damn near everything they said, but I also would not have known any of the issues they brought up without putting myself out there to begin with. I learned some valuable lessons in all of that to be sure.

Ultimately, releasing a test iso here in the forums is a no brainer to me. Sure there may be issues, but they certainly couldn't be very big at this point, and easily fixed I would think.

Yes! Please DO discuss BL development issues in the forums.

You guys are leaders in this community to be sure, and not only provide good insight into the latest trends and developments, but also serve as role models for folks like me who are trying to do something as well but don't have the expertise in all needed areas.

I like to LEARN, and keeping BL locked away in a corner helps nobody. If there is one thing I have found through building my own, is that it doesn't pay to be secretive, and serves no purpose in an open source community.

Anyway, not my ballgame, not my rules:)

I AM looking forward to an ISO, and cannot do anything without one. Personally, I need to be able to go live, and install, and then twenty minutes later delete and do it again after testing. The current upgrade model doesn't allow for the fast changeover I need in order to work on BL directly, or anything else. <-- But this is just me, and just the way I work.

A good common ground would be a clear privacy statement that is just a click away (or maybe in the registration blurb each user has to click to accept in order to register) as each country and locality has their own rules regarding privacy. US users surely would also expect a level of privacy when accessing sites in the UK/EU and other countries, and vice versa.

I agree completely! But mine is not the only opinion that applies round here. Everyone has the right to release their work under whatever conditions they choose.

If all the code in there was mine, I would make the live-build config public. But the author of some of it has requested it remain private and I have no choice but to respect that. It would be kind of tricky to make part of it public.

This is what a team project means, unfortunately. Bigger teams (like XFCE) are able to confer and set rules and devs who don't like them don't have to contribute. One-man operations like #! and Lilidog can do whatever they want. BL is in a tricky space in between.

This is my feeling too. At least until they put some kind of international enforcement network in place...

Although I think the UK proposed laws in question are based on something that's been proposed for the EU too. That leaves the US basically, where it's the law of the jungle.

Or else all the small operations move to Panama or Mongolia??

Thanks for responding. It's all good. Funny enough, it's because I want to see what I could possibly add to BL, not what I could take away.

Anyone should be able to see where your heart is in all of this. Thank you for everything you do @johnraff I'm not sure you, or the rest of the BL team hear that near as often as you should. You guys do great work.

But actually, the content of BL is in the packages. (I know I keep saying this.)
The live-build config is just about putting it together in an iso and making sure the installer works. Yes, some of it is tricky, but that's not what makes BL BL.

I did not care for Discord at first. (ArchLabs) I've done a 180 on that. Superior to 'classic' forums. I have seen the light.

Edit: Not as dynamic/realtime as IRC but much more so that static classic forums.

Discourse & Flarum come up a lot, as do phpBB, MyBB, bbPress and some others that look simple and no-frills. I don't think it will be a quick decision, but it would be nice to find something with a simple elegant interface, no fancy features but solid & secure under the hood. Like BL in fact.

If such a thing exists...

PS to be honest this stuff is way outside my comfort zone.
