This is on an HP 6910, older laptop. I took a picture.
The computer wakes up, I get the usual "enter your password" GUI display and it stops with this screen. I do an alt-SysReq R E I S U B to restart. There's no pathology really, it is just weird. Any explanation for it? I've replicated many many times.

Sounds like graphic driver problems.
see this discussion https://askubuntu.com/questions/688306/ … sleep-mode.
You can try to disable compositor or install newer or older kernel.
I got that problem on an desktop, it was fixed with newer kernel from backports.
Is it the same problem with both suspend and hibernate?
Else, you have to live with it... Do not use powersavings.

Thank-you. Just tried hibernate. Works normally. Yes, live with it.
This is me putting Bunsen on old computers, rather endlessly. Giving them away when they work right. Right now I have 4 old HP laptops, 1 HP desktop, 1 each desktop and laptop of Lenovo. Sadly, many people no longer want computers, they want cellphones. I have some of those, but I make them mostly into security cameras to watch wildlife.
