Setting up the experimental version of Beryllium on Jun 8, 2022, it is still necessary to manually edit /etc/network/interfaces after install to allow network manager to manage the network connections.

Yes.
It's a feature of NetworkManager that it won't alter the config that was set up during the base command-line install without manual intervention.
If you set up a command-line system & boot it.. then instead of installing Beryllium, you use tasksel to install ANY of the standard Debian desktops that use NetworkManager you have to make the same adjustment.
