Upgrading Samsung Galaxy J1 to Android 5 [No longer needed]

My mother needs a particular Android 5 app to control the settings of her new hearing aid, which can't be installed on her Android 4 phone.

It seems that I could do this by downloading and installing a custom ROM, either via a PC, or possibly using the Lollipop installer on her phone.

Has anyone done this upgrade, and what are the problems to avoid? I must point out that I hate using smartphones!

EDIT: Now a moot point, since she has changed it for a newer phone. Phew!
