BL image viewer takes a long to load and sometimes freezes completely

I've been using BL imageviewer to go through my photos in an external harddrive. Then there were several instances where the BL image viewer would freeze completely. My entire pc would enter a zombie mode. I can't even do the "xkill" command b/c even the terminal cannot be activiated.

So at that point I was forced to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button and restart the pc.

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Thank you in advance! smile

Sounds like out of memory. Are the specific images very large?

In order to avoid having to shut down hard, ensure that you have the magic sysrq key enabled: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq)

Then, in order to cleanly shut down, use the key combo sysrq + alt (hold these) and then in order SLOWLY (about 1-2 seconds between e and i): r e i s u b The system will flush file caches and reboot, it's the method that does the least amount of damage.

If you are stuck in an out of memory situation, use

sysrq + alt (hold these) + f to kill a random process to free up memory. sysrq + alt + r also bypasses Xorg and directly

Think corrupt images can cause this as well.

It's the print screen key.

It's the print screen key.

On standard keyboards, yes. On some laptops, it can be bound to literally anything else or hide behind a special function key. For example, on Lenovo Thinkpads, it was (is?) fn+s for a long time.

@twoion @rbh @Anaconda

Thank you so much! I figured it out.

But does anyone know why BL image viewer would take such a long time to load. I switched to using gwenview now and it's having none of the issues as BL image viewer. Is there a way to set the setting of BL image viewer to make it work better?

/usr/bin/bl-image-viewer, is a softlink to /etc/alternatives/bl-image-viewer.

Command "bl-alternatives list", will list wich filemanager, texteditor, mediaplayer  or imagewier, command "bl-filemanager" [...] or "bl-image-viewer" start and which viewer is default.

That question has to less data, to be able to answer.
