how to stop VLC from occupying icons in the lower right?

Every time after I open a video using VLC, and quit the video, there is a small icon that appears, as below

I don't know how to close it. Does anyone know why it does this?

I tried that. It doesn't work. The icon is still there.

Have you tried VLC Preferences? Turn off "Show systray icon" for instance.

After I did that, the icon did disappear, but vlc wouldn't load anymore. I cannot open any video with vlc anymore. I'm now forced to be using mpv instead sad

Wild guess: VLC installed as snap or flatpak or appimage?

Give to COVAX! Here or here. (explanation)

no, this is the vlc that comes with the installation of bunsenlabs.

Should I purge this vlc and re-install?

EDIT: I purge remove vlc and it seems BL media player has stopped responding. Should I also remove BL media player? IT seems that vlc and BL media player are actually the same thing.

there used to be somewhere in the preferences something like 'allow only once instance'. Sounds like that's what you want.

bl-media-player is an alias for whatever media player you set it to (part of Debian's alternatives system). It behaves something the way a symlink does with files - it's not a player in itself. In BL it's set to VLC by default, but if you remove VLC and install one of [ banshee dragonplayer gnome-mpv gxine kaffeine parole smplayer totem ] then that player gets automatically set as bl-media-player. That way scripts and menu items will go on working as before. You can also manually set bl-media-player to anything you want from the menu:
System > Edit Debian Alternatives

bl-text-editor, bl-file-manager and bl-image-viewer work the same way.

OT/
That list of candidate media players needs checking before Beryllium - any suggestions for additions/removals are welcome (I see one already: gnome-mpv -> celluloid).
