Failed to start Light Display Manager

When booting, I get the following message: Failed to start Light Display Manager

'systemctl status lightdm.service' reports the following:

Triggering OnFailure= dependencies
Failed to enqueue OnFailure= job, ignoring: Unit plymouth-quit.service not found

'systemctl list-units --state not-found' gives this output:

tmp.mount
apparmor.service
auditd.service
connman.service
console-screen.service
fcoe.service
iscsi-shutdown.service
iscsi.sercice
iscsid.service
kbd.service
lvm2-activation.service
plymouth-quit-wait.service
plymouth-quit.service
plymouth-start.service
rbdmap.service
systemd-update-done.service
systemd-vconsole-setup.service

How can I get my system to boot? It's a fresh install and I couldn't boot it at all ever since I installed it, there's no way I could have messed something up.

Re: Failed to start Light Display Manager

Huh, Surely we can get you going:)

Computer boots to command prompt?  Can you log in?  Does typing

startx

after logging in as user work to get to a desktop?

How old is your computer?

Can you post the output of:
inxi -Fxrz

Re: Failed to start Light Display Manager

Have the pc booted correct before and suddenly this error came?

Have you made any changes or installed some upgrades just before?

Do you have "plymouth" installed, do you want to let it run?
If not, have you tried:

systemctl disable plymouth-quit-wait.service plymouth-quit.service plymouth-start.service

And ev after reboot:

systemctl remove plymouth-quit-wait.service plymouth-quit.service plymouth-start.service

And look for any apt package "plymouth-" to uninstall.

No, this is literally fresh install, I have not even logged in once before. No changes have been made whatsoever.

I'll give it a try, thanks.

Re: Failed to start Light Display Manager

Try booting with 'nomodeset'.

How old/new is the NVIDIA card? As in, when did this model become widely available? I suppose you are using nouveau driver, not nvidia (for now)? And the default kernel - what, 4.19?

I'll do it.
The card is RTX2070, which, I believe, was released in 2018. Yes, the system is using nouveau driver. The kernel is 4.19.

BL Live image does boot to DE, but only if I boot the USB with BIOS. Booting with UEFI yields some different problem, which also prevents DE from loading.

Re: Failed to start Light Display Manager

But, the BL iso, can load the desktop for the Live session. So you can investigate the difference between the systems if not starting with option "nomodeset", helped.

There's an age discrepancy, I believe the card came out a full year after this Debian version and kernel were originally released. Always a problem with Debian Stable & new hardware. Try a backported kernel.
