Install and theme SMPlayer

A GUI front-end for mpv. Personally, I prefer mpv+SMPlayer to VLC. Install it...

sudo apt install smplayer

That installs everything including youtube-dl (see the man page!), but we don't need avahi-daemon or geo-whatever...

sudo apt purge --autoremove avahi-daemon

SMPlayer is ugly as can be at startup. Theme it...

Open SMPlayer>Options>Preferences>Interface. Set...

GUI [Mini GUI]

Icon set [Papirus] (or Papirus Dark for dark themes)

Style [gtk2]

Result...

Nice.

SMplayer still maintain their Youtube browser? That was a nice tool to search and play videos in SMplayer.

I tried smtube, and it's just awebview of m.youtube.com wrapped in an app.
The same "Do you agree" buttons to click etc.
Just use my script instead

However, I seem to remember that smplayer integrates well with mpv+youtube-dl.

Personally, I do not see a single reason to wrap mpv in something with buttons & icons...
