Quick question to the conky pros out there. text outline weight?
There are these two text color settings:
draw_outline yes # amplifies text if yes
default_outline_color FFFFFF
I'm trying to make the text readable on any background, but the outline is rather heavy.
Is there a "default_outline_weight" variable, or something similar I could include/edit?

You can pick an outline color that is a closer match to your background/test color to cut down the contrast.
There is also the draw_shades and default_shade_color options you can try.
You must unlearn what you have learned.

^ that's a nice trick with the color, but literally answering your question: no. it's 1 pixel all around each letter (and borders, too, iirc), or, when you use shadow, a shadow of each letter with a 1px 1px offset. not sure though how exactly this translates with antialiased fonts, like in your pic.
it's been like that for years, so unless this changed very recently... no.

I had a read of the docs, ohnonot is correct. Doesn't mention it anywhere. it's either on, or off.
I'm fine with the config I have for now. Black text with a white outline hurts my dainty eyes but when inverted it's fine on darker backgrounds.

in addition to outline or shade, you could also try a semi-transparent background image in conky. It comes handy, when a fine texture or various colours in desktop background makes it hard to read the text. You still see your pretty background through your conky.

Actually we have three options (that I am aware of) for semi-transparent backgrounds:
1. semi-transparent images - best if you have images in your conky
2. ARGB true transparency (with a compositor that BL has - compton) - washes out images though
