[DONE] apt-pinning of 100 for deb-multimedia?

Referencing this thread by Pouletic: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=427
I think there is a discussion to be had about the best way to handle deb-multimedia.

As it is, just adding that repo to the sources will give it the default pin priority of 500, so doing the 'dist-upgrade' recommended on the deb-multimedia page will pull in a lot of upgrades, not all of them necessarily needed by a particular user. Using Pouletic's suggestion of pinning at 100 makes more sense to me, but I was afraid it might result in some necessary packages being left out, so in the bl-welcome script I just left things the way the page author recommended.

In contrast, the Debian backports (and BunsenLabs backports) repos are given pinning of 100 by Debian default. Maybe we should also make this our policy for deb-multimedia if people add it from bl-welcome?

Me too.  My biggest "beef" with deb-multimedia has been the developer's preference of ffmpeg over libav (the whole bikeshedding thing).  I've posted about the differences in end results of one vs. the other a couple times.  (ffmpeg transcodes needed an extra rinse cycle through vbrfix, while libav-tools transcodes did not.)  Pin it at 100.

Re: [DONE] apt-pinning of 100 for deb-multimedia?

This is now on the way in the upcoming upgrade of bunsen-welcome.
One point: the repo could be pinned by its url, using 'origin *.deb-multimedia.org' or by the 'origin' field in its Release file like 'release o=Unofficial Multimedia Packages'.

The first will continue to work even if deb-multimedia change their name, while the second will work even if d-m is accessed via a mirror.

Package: *
Pin: origin *.deb-multimedia.org
Pin-Priority: 100

OR

Package: *
Pin: release o=Unofficial Multimedia Packages
Pin-Priority: 100

Any opinions?

Re: [DONE] apt-pinning of 100 for deb-multimedia?

FWIW, I am just an avid user of Crunchbang (& now Bunsenlabs), but, I do support a couple of hundred Linux systems, a whole lot of which are on the CB-BL migration path as well. My take on deb-multimedia repo is that it 'can' be quite useful for Sid users but is pretty much unnecessary for anything tracking Stable. The only file I use it for is libdvdcss2 if it's not already provided. Further, I can trace so many support problems in the past to library conflicts from mixing deb-multimedia with Stable base.

My view from experience, pin it at 100 for sure. Also, I have always used 'origin' method when pinning manually with no problems.

Keep up the great work folks!

Re: [DONE] apt-pinning of 100 for deb-multimedia?

Re those two options - finally it occurred to me that you can have both and no harm done. So any repo whose url matches and any repo whose origin field is "Unofficial Multimedia Packages" will be pinned at 100:

Package: *
Pin: origin *.deb-multimedia.org
Pin-Priority: 100

Package: *
Pin: release o=Unofficial Multimedia Packages
Pin-Priority: 100
