Upgrading to newer releases

Hello and thank you for all the work around BunsenLabs!

Is there a command to check the version of BL I am using?

uname -a

returns

Linux bunsenlabs 4.9.0-14-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.240-2 (2020-10-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Also for upgrading to newer releases, is there any facility for doing this or should I re-install the newer version from scratch each time?

Thank you!
Amir

Upgrading Debian (and by proxy, BL) is always possible without reinstalling.

damo has written a step-by-step guide with instructions, see here: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=6913.

If you have your data completely seaprated (restoring your home and workspace is effortless to you) and if you want to do the least amount of things possible, you can also reinstall.

Re: Upgrading to newer releases

There is also some information on what BunsenLabs version was installed, and how, in /etc/bunsen/bunsen_install.
eg on my system:

john@lithium:~$ cat /etc/bunsen/bunsen_install
Install method: iso
Version: lithium-RC5-amd64
Disk info: Debian GNU/Linux 10 _Lithium_ - Snapshot amd64 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20200722-09:44
Install date: 2020-08-12T09:01:12

(Release Candidate 5 was found to be OK and became the first official release, but the iso file still carries the RC label - a slip that will be fixed in subsequent rebuilds.)
