youtube-dl

There was a discussion on Completely Off Topic Chat starting here, but I think the topic deserves its own thread.

Still no official news on development, but somebody said they have been online chatting, and there's some legal action about to happen. Also that the people directly involved in this legal <expletive_deleted>have to keep mum for, well, legal reasons.

So, one more reason to donate to the EFF!

Meanwhile, I have experienced breakage with the 2020-09-30 version of youtube-dl (the last one since the DMCA takedown) on Youtube.
I have now switched to this fork (AUR) and all's well again. There currently is a lot of activity on that repository.
But keep your eyes peeled for when development gets moved (or at least mirrored) to some non-github, non-US location, as the repo owner promised.

Re: youtube-dl

It's not the only "active" fork I think; which is the problem. I'll wait until it breaks for me; hopefully until then we see some convergence in the landscape. To be fair, I watch most Youtube if any these days in bed on my phone (bad lockdown habits emerging) using Newpipe, which is a separate implementation from ytdl.

Re: youtube-dl

I use  Download Helper plugin in FF to download YT stuff, which may be of use as an alternative.

I downloaded version 2020.10.31 from the link provided by ohnonot to my local ~/bin without sudo. It runs decently with firejail.

A site with an older version is https://gitlab.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl.

Re: youtube-dl

How is the 11.01.2020 version? Is that good or a bad one as I got it from the DMO repo.

Re: youtube-dl

The main site has a newer version:
https://yt-dl.org/ => https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/yout … 1.1.tar.gz
It originates from gitlab.
It's not hard to find the "real monty" youtube-dl there, among all the mirrors, judging from the name of the maintainer, the amount of stars, and activity.

I hope fragmentation can be avoided, but currently the new "official" version still doesn't work with bandcamp, but the fork mentioned in post #1 does. sad
