[SOLVED] AMD SEV - firmware not loaded

Hi guys,

I was able to install Lithium with no hassles on a new work machine but upon booting, was greeted with the following somewhat cryptic error messages:

nouveau 0000:01:00.0: unknown chipset (162000a1)
sp5100-tco sp5100-tco: Watchdog hardware is disabled
ccp 0000:22:22.1: firmware: failed to load amd/sev.fw (-2)
firmware_class: See https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware for information about missing firmware

This is all I get, the third one is presumably the most relevant. The link had no info about SEV from what I can see but I definitely don't know enough about what firmware newer AMD chips need.

The same error occurs when I try to boot the live Bunsen distro. I tried another live distro (Kubuntu) and it seems to work fine. So my best guess is that there's some higher-level s/w that isn't loaded by default in a more bare-bones distro like Bunsen or perhaps even Debian.

Any ideas if this is possible to fix? Would rather use Bunsen over any *buntu if possible.

You don't give any information of your hardware. That makes it harder to find a solution on your problem. I did some search on your errors.

nouveau 0000:01:00.0: unknown chipset (162000a1)

nouveau (/nuːˈvoʊ/) is a free and open-source graphics device driver for Nvidia video cards and the Tegra family of SoCs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouveau_(software).

sp5100-tco sp5100-tco: Watchdog hardware is disabled

Your hardware does not support whatchdog. More about watchdog at https://linuxhint.com/linux-kernel-watchdog-explained/

ccp 0000:22:22.1: firmware: failed to load amd/sev.fw (-2)

Maybe you can get soome help from https://github.com/PSPReverse/sev-tool?

I tried another live distro (Kubuntu) and it seems to work fine.

No idea. But:
First of all: boot Debian Live, see if you have same problem as with Bunsenlabs.

Does the boot of BL stop with the error messages, or can you boot to command prompt or Does X start?

If you can boot to command prompt, have you enabled backports and updated/upgraded?

Make an internetsearch of your hardware and compatability with Debian.

Yeah, disregard. It was stopping because I put nomodeset in the wrong place on the kernel command in GRUB so kept trying to boot the Nouveau driver, presumably. Am posting this from the new machine so clearly it works now...
