The only thing you need to configure the system is sudo-rights and an terminal.

If you open an terminal, can you became root with the command:

sudo su -l

You will be asked the password, after entering it, you will be root instead.

If you can do "sudo su -", you can start synaptic in the terminal, as you your-self, write in terminal:

sudo -i synaptic

You will be asked the password. After entering it, synaptic will come up.

If you can not become root with sudo, you will get some error in the terminal. Please post the error message if you get one.

More about sudo here: https://wiki.debian.org/sudo

Which applications are not starting? Are they all those that need to be root?

NB You can use apt, apt-get, aptitude, dpkg for managing software.

Synaptic can also be started with pkexec, either in a terminal or the Run Command box:

pkexec synaptic

Re: Synaptic

Thanks, it's already solved, through the terminal

pkexec synaptic

Also the same command in dmenu (Alt+F3 to open dmenu at the top of the screen, then start typing the command).

Re: Synaptic

BTW, catfish is another app that I and others have had trouble opening from a menu command. It opens consistently via the terminal or dmenu, though...

catfish

This bug might have something to do with GTK errors in my Lithium themes. Check by switching to the default GNOME theme, Adwaita.

I'll test later, I'm currently on pure Buster and will have to reboot to Lithium on my other laptop.

Hello juancuyo, thanks for the bug report!
If you have the time, I wonder if you could list the applications which fail to open for you? I'd like to see if I can reproduce the problem, and maybe we can find out what is causing it.

(As @hhh said, catfish is already known to be unreliable.)

Re: Synaptic

Just tested using the default Lithium theme and icon set, the menu entry works fine, though it is a double entry if you just type-to-search in jgmenu for 'synaptic' (a known bug). Either one brings up the Password dialog for me and then launches Synaptic. Same using 'pkexec synaptic' in a terminal, I get no GTK or any other error messages (boo-yah!)

No such luck with Catfish from the menu, but it opened fine from the terminal with the following GTK error...

roy@TyrellCorp:~$ catfish

(catfish:1223): Gtk-WARNING **: 22:06:15.179: ../../../../gtk/gtkwidget.c:8584: widget not within a GtkWindow

I get the same error using Adwaita themes and icons.

This could be a theme issue, a screensize issue, a hardware issue, a Buster issue, etc...

Re: Synaptic

There's also this bug in GNOME/WAYLAND. This shouldn't be the issue, but who knows...

The menu search function shows every menu entry with that name. Since synaptic does appear twice, once in the "Applications" auto-generated section, and also in the "System" section, it's debatable whether or not that's a bug IMO.

Anyway, whichever of the search results you click on, the app should start, so if synaptic does not open, that would indeed be a bug.
