Hi All,
I've arrive here from this thread on crunchbang:
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=25850
I've a problem with compton, and it's exactly that when I play a fullscreen video in Google Chrome image gets frozen.
If i disable compton, video in Chrome works ok, but then I've tearing on system and video playback in other browser or applications. If I enable compton and go to fullscreen video playback then image gets frozen (stops). No matter if I use HTML5 or Flash, in both ways the problem is.
I need Chrome to work ok using Compton but I don't know how to
The weirdest thing is that even disabling compton I've no tearing on fullscreen with Chrome, it makes me think that a new feature has been included in the browser to fix this, but perhaps there is some conflict betweem Chrome and Compton.

Many thanks.

Try the compton setting here: here
If it’s only happening with full-screen applications, compton’s `--unredir-if-possible` unredirects the screen when there’s a full-screen window.
I think you can add it to `compton.conf` with
unredir-if-possible = true

That - right there - cleared my tearing at full screen.
Thanks damo.

This is also there: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … st13396230 and to quote from there:
If it’s only full-screen applications that have performance issues with compton running, --unredir-if-possible causes compton to unredirect the screen (thus with almost zero performance penalty) when there’s a full-screen window.
Using the Openbox (3.5.2) session of Lubuntu 14.04 LTS but very interested in BL :)

Hi all!!
Many thanks for the answers I've still not solved the problem but I'm very glad watching so many help
This problem is really curious, two weeks ago the video hanged completely after a max of 3-4 seconds. Now, after some system updates it continue failing, but sometimes i can even watch a complete 3 minutes video, and then image hangs on the start of next video.
I've try adding "unredir-if-possible = true" to my ~/.compton.conf file and there is no difference, then I've try forcing the correct name of the file using this:
compton --config ~/.compton.conf -b &
It seems to reduce the problem then (perhaps the program was trying to read ~/compton.conf by default and didn't exist. I mean, now it fails less, but the problem continue randomly and specially with 1080p videos at 60p (in those videos the problem is very easy to reproduce).
Of course, killing compton process makes the problem dissapears, but I've notice some "heavy videos" 1080p 60hz suffers from some froze every certain time, every x seconds I've image frozen for 0,5 - 1 second. It makes me think there is some problem with Google Chrome video playback, and this problem goes much worse when compton is activated.
I've try with firefox (compton activated) and everything's ok, even those 1080p 60hz videos plays perfectly.
My problem is I need Chrome for some services, such as Nexflix.
Thanks to all

Hi All,
If it helps anyone, I've notice Chrome have problem playing some 1080p 60hz youtuve videos, even with compton disabled, so there could be some problem related to the latest stable version (47.0.2526.73 64 bits). The problem I'm talking about is not complete freeze of image but stops of 0,5 - 1 sec every certain time. This is one of the videos that shows this behaviour:

In the same machine (Intel N3150 with 4GB RAM) using firefox everything works great.
If I disable compton I still have tearing, so it's not an option.

That link works perfect for me at full screen:
$ apt-cache policy midori iceweasel
midori:
Installed: 0.4.3+dfsg-0.1
iceweasel:
Installed: 38.3.0esr-1~deb8u1
So I'm guessing you're right, it must be a chrome thing.

Just a few shots at 1080/60 to try out Youtube's new 60fps capability. These are real world shots, not video game captures. Need to select 720p or 1080p to view at 60 fps using an HTML5 video player. Shot in 2D on a Sony TD10 (3D capable camera).
The new 60 fps feature only works in the HTML5 video player, which is the default when using the Chrome browser. Other browsers may default to the Flash video player but that player is unable to display video at 60 fps. Additionally, you may experience dropped frames due to your Internet bandwidth and/or the processing power of your computer and its ability to decode and display frames at 60 fps.
It works fine for me in Chrome but I was also running it on top end hardware.
Hardware: 6 core Intel Core I7 running at 4 Ghz, nvidia Titanx and 32gb ram.

Worked for me just fine in IceWeasel.
