[DONE] Add "disable compositing" button to live session welcome popup?

With the latest version of picom requiring 3D acceleration and OpenGL, a lot of testers using Virtual Machines are hitting extreme weirdness on their desktops. I also got this until I discovered the necessary settings on virt-manager:

Display Spice > "Listen type" > None > Check the OpenGL box.
Under "Video Virtio" enable 3D Acceleration.

The alternative is to turn off composition, losing round corners, transparency etc.

It might require putting out an RC3 iso for testing, and so delay the Official Release, but should we add a note to the popup Welcome message on the live system, with a button to temporarily disable composition?

Alternative solution

To avoid having to spend more development time, we could just make sure there's a prominent message about Composition and OpenGL in the Release Notes.

This.

Re: [DONE] Add "disable compositing" button to live session welcome popup?

It would probably not help to add a message to the Welcome window.  When I experienced the issue - the popup Welcome window did not show any text (until it was resized). Another solution is to have the compositor disabled for the live and installation media and a prompt to have it enabled during the Welcome script (which might not be desirable because the look and feel is not optimized).

This.

I agree with this also. Easy fix when you are warned in advance. smile

Agreed, that's what Release Notes are for.

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Re: [DONE] Add "disable compositing" button to live session welcome popup?

I can add a link to the Release Notes to the popup live "welcome" message (not the bl-welcome window that opens after first install).
OFC that requires the release notes post to exist - maybe just an empty placeholder till it gets written...

EDIT: placeholder post is here: https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=9675
That link won't change at release time, but there will be some content by then!

Longer term, a button would be nice. I say that as someone whose several BunsenLabs installs over the years have never once run on bare metal, and who doesn't care about round corners and transparency (they perform poorly over remote desktop anyway...)

Re: [DONE] Add "disable compositing" button to live session welcome popup?

It turned out not to be hard to do, and the popup message that appears in live sessions now has buttons to disable compositing, and show the carbon release Notes (when they're written).
