Gimp suits my purposes for simple editing. The more complex stuff is... complex, but I seldom need it. When some slightly more advanced task comes up I do a web search and usually find a way to accomplish it. Then by the next time it's needed, I've forgotten.
People who need to do sophisticated image manipulation every day, I don't know. Either they learn Gimp inside out or buy Photoshop (is there a Linux version?).
That said, it seems to be slowly improving. eg Adding a bit of text to an image, moving it around, changing the font etc a few days later, is much easier than it used to be.

Believe it or not I still use mtPaint (.deb).
It's great for PNG images and I've created (edited) hundreds of icons.
For SVG images I use Inkscape.
Of course, ImageMagick is there to help if needed.
I haven't used GIMP in a very long time.
EDIT
I remembered that we have a member here who is a professional image editor.
I'm a photographer and image editor by my previous training and work, so getting colors to look right and good is part of my profession.

If people would know how little brain is ruling the world, they would die of fear.

^ Professionals are unlikely to find GNU's Image Manipulation Program useful because it doesn't have native CMYK support, although it can be hacked in: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GIMP/CMYK_support

For those who (like me) don't like Gimp and whose photoediting needs are modest, there's a very good online alternative called PhotoPea;

If you don't mind spending a moderate amount of money for a really good Windows program that (hopefully) runs under Wine, I can recommend Paint Shop Pro.
I was given a copy of this program in the 1990s but I can't use it now because my computer no longer has a floppy drive. I haven't found anything I'd want to do with a photo editing program that Paint Shop Pro doesn't do.

(This is the Pro version which is on special offer at the moment. The Standard version is, oddly, more expensive.)

On the GIMP road-map some possible GIMP 3.2 features include vector layers
That sounds interesting, hopefully with great pdf export compatibility.

Cool. All you need to do is wait for another 10 years. ![]()
EDIT Gimp 2.8.0 was released in 2012. It took 13 years to go from 2.8.0 to 3.0.0, so...

Dedoimedo reviews Gimp 3.0 here, and seems to be cautiously impressed;

As I said, I'm not a fan myself but it does seem to have a following.
