Re: September 2024 Screenshot Thread

@r.chaffee53, really? Read this page dude. Read previous pages. Question is, what's the point of the exercise when no one here seems exited about Bunsen Labs? I feel it's a valid point.

I'm excited about BL. I'm working to improve the documentation and you helped.
Am I no one? smile

And it's bunsenlabs not Bunsen Labs. BL for short. wink HTH

Forgive me for saying... Is it just me or do most people here post scrots while using other distributions? It's ok with me and don't give a shite what people do but... Damn. How much longer can BL (at least the forum) last when most people here openly don't use the fu-king distro? I mean, really? Things I should've considered before making it my daily driver.

If:  "It's ok with me and don't give a shite what people do", then why do you seem to be bothered or upset with it?

As mentioned by others, most or some of us multiboot several different distros on a single pc.  Some distros are debian based, some are arch based, some are independant based or some other base.  On my main laptop I have 5 different distros multibooted.  On my spare laptop, I have 9 different distros multibooted.  Why do I do this?  Because I prefer some or one distro for doing somethings and another or others for doing other things.  And, one, two, or three of them are my favorites.  And sometimes it depends on what mood I am in when I decide which to boot into and log into.  And, not to put down BL or anything, it is not the worst, but also not the best distro since sliced bread.

I use Arch BTW!  If it is not rolling, it is stagnant!

Re: September 2024 Screenshot Thread

I use GNOME these days because I like the window manager and the unification of the DE. I'm disappointed that GNOME 47 now has a dependency to Nautilus and tracker-miner-fs, and to gnome-online-accounts, but that's not enough to turn me away from GNOME at this time. I know enough about it to make it work for me, and I like it more than Openbox/labwc. It's not an offense to those WMs, it's my preference. I like hyprland too, but it has some quirks and is being developed quickly, (and the main dev has some weird anti-wokeness agenda combined with an uWu fetish, but that's neither here nor there), and that makes it too volatile for it to be my daily driver. Yes, I like flashy eye-candy, I have to look at the thing and I like what I like. Some of the things I like about GNOME (and Compiz before that) made their way into BL (rounded corners, smooth animations...) I'm quite curious about the Cosmo desktop, but that is not anywhere near stable yet.

I use Ubuntu because I want some packages that are more current in Ubuntu than in Debian stable, and I like apt, and it's still possible to run Ubuntu without Snaps or Flatpaks, but if that becomes undo-able I'll go back to Debian (or maybe Arch, but giving up apt and stability would be painful). I've posted Windows scrots and Android scrots because I like to see what else is going on. If I had a Mac I'd post those scrots too, but I'll never own a Mac because I don't need it for work and I hate the Apple corporation.

I still regularly set up a Debian sid partition to develop BunsenLabs because I'm invested in this project. Heck, I was the guy who took a couple of months to figure out live-build back in the day that enabled us to put out our first ISO. Type to search and infinite scrolling for jgmenu were my suggestions as well, thanks for incorporating them @malm! BL is a great distrolet that does many things right.

This thread used to have a note in the OP for each month that all OSes and DEs/WMs are welcome, because I think it's cool to see what Linux has to offer (and Windows and Mac, for that matter).

It's all Linux. Linux is still better than the alternatives right now in my opinion.

My BunsenLabs philosophy from the get-go, as someone who does not have programming skills, is that the elitism of the Arch and Debian forums flat-out sucks, and you shouldn't put anyone down for being a noob, and that that is the best way to grow Linux. @johnraff and the other devs we've had have seemed to agree with me. Be inclusive, not exclusive. So sue me.

I'd use BL as my daily driver in a heartbeat if I was a Linux beginner, but I'm not anymore. I'm using Linux for what Linux is best at... customizing it to one's own needs. Also it's fast, low usage of system resources, quick updates, not much user tracking...

@Zepher, chack out the Development and Suggestions forum if you want to see some amazing passion for the future of BunsenLabs.

Re: September 2024 Screenshot Thread

I reckon there is plenty to be excited about in the future of bunsenlabs! big_smile

This isn't exactly a screenshot but a YT screenvid of my old HP crappy lappy running my crappy debian "desert-moonrise" artwork submission (power-on to desktop - including plymouth theme) on an early developmental netinstall of bunsenlabs-wayland.

https://youtu.be/5T50wWFXGXc

Note, the video is about as exciting as watching paint dry but I'm proud of the effort I've put in and appreciate all the feedback I've had off of those who have tested.

#!/bin/sh
echo '#include <stdio.h>\nvoid main() { printf("Hi, bunsenlabs\\n"); return; }' > bunsen.c
gcc bunsen.c -o bunsen

^yes! 2 and a half laps of plymouth! And all the console in between. Once booted it runs quite well. I wouldn't want to compile a kernel though.

Look at the user stats at the bottom of the first page of the forum. Usually, there are 50-200 "guests" online and >3000 registered users. I don't know the download stats for Boron. Like any other forums, it's only a small percentage of the user base that is posting screenshots or talking about movies and music. Most users show up looking for an answer to an issue, or seeing if there is a question they can answer. Then they go back to their regular routine.

Same here: boring stock BL, and has been since BL began. Before that, boring stock Ctunchbang. Nothing interesting to show, and so few problems with the distro that I like to keep it that wzy.

I think the number of registered users is unrealistic.
We have a lot of spam accounts.
Last year at one point the number of users was also around 3200, then someone (probably @johnraff) did a major cleanup and we went back to around 2500.
I think we are now somewhere around 2700-2800 users.

@johnraff

Are you sure nothing changed after this:
https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 65#p128065

I'm pretty sure I used to have the option to replace MEMBER with some phrase, but now it's gone (I don't know when).
There is an example where a user with less than 200 posts uses this possibility.
Or I missed something on the Profile  pages.

I'm not sure if users ever had the option of editing their forum title - maybe users with more than a certain number of posts? Anyway, it's gone now. But moderators can change users' titles, and anyone who'd like a custom title can just email a moderator, or ask them here on the forum. It's usually no problem, and I remember such cases from long ago.

^ Fairly recently, if I recall correctly. Someone had changed their title for awhile, then decided they missed the old one. Posted it somewhere and I changed it back for them. That was maybe six or nine months ago?

Re: September 2024 Screenshot Thread

Maybe that user option got dropped when the forum was migrated to the new server? All the plugins were left out at that point.

But mods can still change user titles.

I think @Nili asked to change his username.
He later realized it wasn't a good idea and is now using @Nili again.
I love his monochrome screenshots and that's probably why I remembered it.

Re: September 2024 Screenshot Thread

EDIT: Sorry @marens, I posted before reading your comment, which said pretty much the same thing.

I just remembered - wasn't that someone asking to change their user name not title? Mods can do that, but it's not something we should do often IMO, only if there's a good reason. Forum members could easily get confused about who they are talking to. Maybe the member at that time also realised that, and asked for their name to be changed back?

I think the Arch forums are also negative about changing user names.
