Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 ultra which I purchased new and unlocked. Thunar for some reason won't recognize the phone as a drive, nothing. I have tried three different cables which are 'a' to 'c' but still won't work. I understand this may not be the right place to ask this question but with my elder android phones, never had this problem. I'd like to download my photos to my computer, wipe the phone and sell it as I'd like to upgrade but the photos are dear to me having to deal with my late father. Is there a setting in thunar which I don't know about preventing this?

Make sure gvfs and gvfs-backends are installed.

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

So, sudo apt-get update, followed by apt-get install 'package'?

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

Yes.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install package-1 package-2

Install all the packages you need. Just those two for now.

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

Nope, already installed. I suppose it's the phone for whatever reason. Man it was an expensive phone a couple of years ago. Oh well, I appreciate your input @PackRat. smile

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

It's a common problem. You can use the forum search feature. Middle of the tool bar at the top of the page. There should be some threads with some other tips and tricks. Debian has other mtp tools for accessing android devices.

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

Thx, in this case it's not a Debian issue. I have both BL and Archcraft installed on both computers, both use Thunar. same result. Nope, think it's the damn phone but thanks again.

Think what I'll do is simply email myself the pictures in question to an old gmail account which I use mainly for youtube. It may take a while but heck, should work. There's always a workaround smile

Not a thunar problem; android devices only use a certain file transfer protocol which doesn't support mounting. Install android-file-transfer or whatever tool it is for your distro (I use arch btw)

Try:

$ sudo apt install android-file-transfer

After connecting the phone to your computer, have you "tapped" yes on the phone screen to give permission to the connection?

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

^I guess all phones are different, but that's all I have to do to get a connection.
My phone asks if I want to "transfer photos" (presumably mtp), "transfer files" (mounts the phone storage on the computer file system), or "charge only".

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

^I have been using 'LocalSend' for a long time for a fast connection in the home network between telephones and computers.

There is a .deb package currently available in version 1.15.3 here:

https://localsend.org/
https://github.com/localsend/localsend/releases

android would be 1.15.3-android-x64.apk

Both devices must have LocalSend installed. Both must be in the same home wifi network. Before using it for the first time, you should set or remember where the data is saved. It is sometimes a bit tricky because the data is already on the destination because it is absolutely fast.

apt show localsend

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

I'd like to thank all of you for your suggestions. @Sector11, same here. In the past the phone would immediately prompt me when hot plugged and ask if I wished to allow sharing or something to that effect. It's stopped doing exactly that. @marens, thank you. @unklar, I'll look into LocalSend but generally shy away from installing this type of software on my phone because sadly, I'm so reliant upon it for communication with our family and commerce (boy, wish I wasn't). I just think it's the darn phone which sucks because I can't now in good conscience sell it privately or hope to upgrade the phone through Samsung or my carrier. I know this really wasn't a question germane to the forum but I really appreciate all the responses.

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

Ok, purchased a new cable and it works a charm. Sorry folks but what's the chance that three cables were bad? I guess, winding or folding them up probably caused the issue. Thanks again to all and I'll mark this as solved. smile

Re: Unable to connect phone to computer [SOLVED]

Probably not a break in the cable itself, but torquing the actual connection is problematic, the tolerances are very shabby, even if it's just being slightly torqued by the bend in the cable causing pressure on one side of the connection. Micro-USB is the worst for this, it can break over barely anything. Try to put it in upside down at the micro end, broken. Twist the micro end ever-so-slightly, broken. Glad you got it solved!

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?
