Methods To Add Bells And Whistles From BL To Crunchbang Wheezy

I am running Crunchbang Waldorf and very happy with it. I don't want to leave crunchbang and install BL. However I would like to use the better things that BL might have to offer from their repos and configs as and when required and at the same time keep my legacy crunchbang install intact. For example, I would love to use BL's Conky config and newer packages like mpv that it might have. Anyone has attempted this without breaking crunchbang? Please do let me know. Do let know any suggestions you have.

Re: Methods To Add Bells And Whistles From BL To Crunchbang Wheezy

it is possible to use bunsenlabs' scripts and themes and such, as they're not depending on the underlying debian version, at least mostly.
it is not possible with e.g. mpv, because mpv is fairly new and backporting it to debian oldstable (that is what crunchbang basically is) is impossible. you might be able to get a very old mpv version working, but in that case you're better off with mplayer, imho.

that said, i'm pretty sure there's some tutorial threads wither here or on crunchbang forums for what you want, or at least part of it.

The BL scripts and some of the pipemenus will use `yad` for the dialogs, and not `zenity` (although there is some discussion about including tests for yad or zenity); many of the scripts also require commands taken from `bl-include` config; remember you will never be able to upgrade Waldorf because the repos are no longer available (and haven't been maintained anyway).

fwiw, i recently upgraded a crunchbang install to debian jessie without major problems; from there it's just a few small steps to make it bunsenlabs.

Re: Methods To Add Bells And Whistles From BL To Crunchbang Wheezy

My today's Sid system is actually the one I gradually upgraded from Waldorf. The majority of those cb-scripts were to create the menu. Of course, I had to get rid of two apps, and reinstall them from Jessie, one was Tint2, the other I can't remember. They automatically got upgraded to Sid later.  The cb-include script was only to get the help in the menu. I don't use that menu anymore. The majority of those scripts are replaced with one app, Obamenu.

Anyway, if anyone wants the bl-configs, just change the cb-scripts with bl-scripts.

Thanks for the wisdom. Can you help me in achieving what you did? How do I go about converting my cb to debian jessie as you did? I am scared of breaking my OS. So I want to proceed with caution. I have parked the idea of BL as of now. I want to convert by cb to jessie.

There are threads on the CrunchBang forums:
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=38111
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=38918

Be sure to fully back up any and all important data before attempting this though as it is very much at your own risk.

There is no officially sanctioned upgrade path.

Thank you, I am hugely tempted to follow one of these tutorials. Might just do it anytime. Will post problems and results soon. I guess, I am done with thinking. Just do it!!

Re: Methods To Add Bells And Whistles From BL To Crunchbang Wheezy

Tried updating to Jessie and broke my system sad

Thankfully had my backup data handy. Took almost half a day to clean install CB and bring back my system as it used to be. Commented out waldorf and made changes to sources so that wheezy is followed properly. Going to let the system settle down for a while. Might not try BL transition in a rush. Would let Wheezy run for a while.

Found this link: https://gist.github.com/Ravenstine/c8054fe1673d5095ea4c

Might try this method after a while. Don't want to crash my system again so soon smile

That guide is nonsense.

It advises replacing the Crunchbang Waldorf repositories with "Janice" repositories.

There are no "Janice" repositories and there never have been.

@corenominal teased the #! community with the Janice carrot and then snatched it away sad
