Forum timeout

Hi.

I had a lot of reading to do when I came back home and opened the forum site.
On second post, there was an interesting link. Took some time before I returned to forum.
Then there was no posts marked as New.

I clicked the link Posted, but the first handful links, was to posts I already had read. A lot of other important tasks needed my attention, so those unread posts will remain  unread.
I have a foggy recollection of discussion about "Forum timeout", but can't find the thread.

Is the forum timeout 30 min?
I propose to set it to 60 min.

Alternatively, if it is possible, mark unread posts unread. I am more used to that.

Re: Forum timeout

This has been one of my bug bears with the BB forums.  The new posts time out, it's a pain in the backside.

Do we need a timeout at all?

It has been decided so, a long time ago. The paranoia has not decreased since then...

Some people forget to log out when using public computer. That is a security hazzard.
How big the problem is, I can not tell.

Re: Forum timeout

I just look at the posts by date ("Today" is a starting point) if I return and posts I haven't marked as read are now "read".

But, yes, annoying.

Re: Forum timeout

But @John is juggling a thousand things right now, can we let him get Boron out of the door and update bunsenlabs.org before any of this?

Re: Forum timeout

Agree, the release is more important.  It's been this way forever, so what's another few months?

Re: Forum timeout

My workaround: when I open "new posts", I immediately open all of them in new tabs (except ones I'm sure I'm not interested in). Usually it's not more than a dozen or so, and BL pages are light with no javascript (or very little) so they can just wait their turn, while you go off and follow links etc. The only requirement is to finish checking them all before closing down.

But don't forget to go to "new posts" one more time because by the time you're done, there might be some more.

I don't know if it has any relevance, but I always click "mark all topics as read" at the end, because my own replies seem to be treated as new posts.

As to the timeout, the subject did come up before, but right now I don't recall if there's a control panel setting to adjust it, or if it would mean hacking the code itself. So yes, can we shelve this till after the release?

Re: Forum timeout

Open "New Posts"
Leave that page open until you have "right-click-open in new tab" for each topic you want to visit.

Re: Forum timeout

^this.

(as in my post #8 above)

I haven't hit any timeout problems in the last couple of years. If you're composing a longish reply I think it's a good idea to hit the "Preview" button from time to time - it might help keep the server awake or something (and anyway typos seem to be more visible to me in a review).

Re: Forum timeout

Yes there are workarounds, I'll just say I prefer how other boards behave, If I haven't read any new replies, the topic stays highlighted forever, or until I read it, mark it read, or mark topics read on a per section or forum wide basis.

I have too many tabs open typically as it is. I can usually manage without issues, but times I get called away to do some mundane but nevertheless important little thing like reach something from a shelf, I end up with no easy way to track what I may have missed as it's no longer marked.

It's an annoyance, that's all.
