Hi, my flatbed scanner is old (2002), its a VUEGO model 6678-1VU which I think is a clone of a BENQ
I have installed Xsane, simplescan and gscan2pdf using synaptic package manager but I can't get any of them to detect the scanner. Same with GNU gimp
The scanner is found by this cmd but only by using root
$ sudo sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
# Not checking for parallel port scanners.
# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
I guess I need to change the scanner permissions but this is outside of my linux knowledge, any advice would be appreciated thanks.

You might be out of luck with this one. We're talking a 20+ year old scanner that didn't even have good support on Windows (XP?), from what I can see online.
You could try following the instructions on the Debian Wiki for a start...

I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Hmm, I have the same problem with an Epson scanner that has worked just fine with Linux for ages. Then, all of a sudden, a month or two ago it is not 'discovered' when I try to scan. I have not changed anything, only installed updates. Same generation of Debian/BL combo as when scanning worked.
Been too busy to investigate...

Something has gone wrong. Vendor 046d, is Logitech. Logitech device c229, should be 'Logitech G19 Gaming Keyboard Macro Interface'. Do you have that device attached?
Do you connect the scanner with usb cable? Disconnect it and run command "lsusb". Connect the scanner and run "lsusb" again. Make a not of the new device listed.
For one old scanner, i have a line:
Bus 003 Device 007: ID 055f:021c Mustek Systems, Inc. BearPaw 1200 CU Plus
When I look it up in the linux-hardware database, I see that that chip is in some different machines. No scan, has status "Works".
So, I have given up trying to get it to work.
I can get it to work, with VueScan, but have to pay a small fee.

Thank you for the replies. rhb you are correct I do have the logitech G19 keyboard. When I checked the lsusb there was no difference with the scanner plugged in or not. Windows 10 couldn't find drivers for it, but it did recognize it as a flatbed scanner with a problem.
So to save a lot of time I bought a cheap HP printer/scanner (2720e) which worked straight away with the usb cord and gscan2pdf which I had already installed.
The old Vuego scanner is in the bin. I hate to throw out working things but what can you do.
