Re: Boron themes

My VM display is pretty lo-res, but:
soHbr7gl.png
Turned on menu icons at 15px, but they look a bit different from hhh's screen, and some are missing. We can search around and add some custom icons to our BL package, or just symlinks. Or don't have menu icons.

The corners of the notification popup need some attention.

Maybe recolour the terminal with a light background & dark text?

But overall I think this might be OK as our default desktop, no?

Re: Boron themes

bunsen-numix-icon-theme has been uploaded to Boron.
Install it and you get Numix-Bunsen-Circle-aqua{,-Light} and Numix-Bunsen-Circle-darkred{,-Light}
For the dark theme you want Numix-Bunsen-Circle-darkred, and for the light one Numix-Bunsen-Circle-aqua-Light

The icon colours can easily be tweaked later if necessary. smile

Re: Boron themes

^I used Boron and Boron-light-aqua from here: https://github.com/hhhorb/boron-themes
Are they not good enough?

Re: Boron themes

^ Those themes are fine, but it's easy enough to change the highlight colors for the rest... I just uploaded Boron-aqua, a dark theme with aqua highlights.

I should trim the themes as you suggested before I upload any more.

re: jgmenu, I use icon size 16, and I use the GitHub version of Numix, not the Debian repo. Maybe that makes a difference. Also, maybe running BL in Qemu changes things slightly, I don't know (I have Qemu/Virtual Machine Manager set up now but haven't played with it much).

It's mostly the border of the notification themes that are messed up, that's because I haven't created a matching theme and am using Xfce's default. I think if I create a theme it should fix things for the most part. Putting that on the To Do list.

Or upload them complete, and give me a list of stuff to remove when packaging for BL?

re: jgmenu, I use icon size 16, and I use the GitHub version of Numix, not the Debian repo. Maybe that makes a difference.

I think it does make some difference - the github theme looks somewhat ahead of Debian (surprise!). I had a look a couple of days ago and there seems to have been some cleaning up of broken symlinks etc done. OTOH if there are no major problems with the Debian numix packages it would save the work of having to package them ourselves. Had a quick glance at the Debian source code just now, and it looks fairly simple in fact, so if there is value in using the latest github version it wouldn't be difficult. Same for Circle. I think it's best to use both from the same place, either GitHub or Debian. We might even consider adding Numix Square icons if we use GitHub.

Also, maybe running BL in Qemu changes things slightly, I don't know (I have Qemu/Virtual Machine Manager set up now but haven't played with it much).

One thing it certainly changes is that it's squeezed into a 1280x768 window - pretty lo-res so pixels look bigger. A full-sized display will show the details like corners smaller and more elegant.

It's mostly the border of the notification themes that are messed up, that's because I haven't created a matching theme and am using Xfce's default. I think if I create a theme it should fix things for the most part. Putting that on the To Do list.

Another place to look is jgmenu when an item at the top or bottom is highlighted. The corners of the highlighting get clipped off by the rounding of the window corners. Maybe possible to put in a bit of padding in jgmenurc?

I've removed the Makefile and .sass-cache from the repo (except for Boron-light, keeping a copy there). Optionally, you can also remove metacity-1, unity, xfwm4.

Scratch that, better to add a 3px border to jgmenu menu settings.

BTW, I've updated the current themes in my repo and added two new ones (moss) plus a grub splash and debian installer header image. wink

When I set
menu_border         = 3
it added a black border and removed the rounded corners!

Ah! You have to colour the border the same as color_menu_bg, ie #e5d8d4
color_menu_border   = #E5D8D4 100

Then the border itself is rounded and it looks OK:
OvtWF8Kl.png
It does add 3 px of space around the menu content, and means that the emerald "selected" boxes don't go all the way to the sides, but that's the price of not having their corners cropped off by the rounding I guess.

Re: Boron themes

^That looks fine to me. I've messed with a larger border but it just starts to look goofy to me. I like the no-border look as well, but agree this looks a bit better.

Re: Boron themes

Other things being equal, I also preferred the no-border look, but not having the selection corners cropped trumps that, I think.

Maybe if the rounded corner radius came down slightly, we'd be able to use a 2px border?? But such fine tweaking can wait a bit, as long as it looks basically OK for now.

Of course what happens now is that if you switch to another GTK theme the jgmenu border colour doesn't follow along, and you're left with a light #E5D8D4 border round eg a Dark Dragon menu. neutral

I don't think anything can be done about that, unless there's some kind of menu-border-color setting in the GTK or Openbox themes we can set for each of our packaged themes. In that case jgmenu might automatically sync... or else we'd have to pester @malm to make it do so.

Of course BLOB will store the jgmenurc file itself, so theme-switching via BLOB should work OK.

That grub splash is beautiful.
I think the text colours of light-gray and light-cyan are fine as they are?

Re: Boron themes

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, the text colors look fine, as does the default grub color (white).

re: jgmenu border, go back to 3px padding instead of border. Doesn't that allow jgmenu to still follow the OB or GTK color scheme?

Re: Boron themes

Testing jgmenu with the default jgmenurc found in /usr/share/bunsen/skel/.config/jgmenu and padding 3px right left bottom looks right to me whether syncing jgmenu to OB or GTK. Let's go with that if confirmed.

Re: Boron themes

^Yes, that does it, and I agree padding looks like the cleanest way to achieve this. cool

---
If in the future there should ever be a problem with padding, I did find another way:
menu_border         = 3
color_menu_border   = #E5D8D4 0
The colour can be anything because it's transparent.
EDIT: but note - with composition turned off, transparent borders turn black! So it's not such a great option if the same config is going to be used in the lite version.

The round corners are smaller (but only for jgmenu) because the compositor sees the 3px border. It still looks OK I think, but your way is better. (Unless you actually prefer the menu with less rounding.)

For reference:

Those round corners are so sexy even in the jgmenu! Nice work smile
