[Solved] 64 bit-some files in USB firmware directory have zero length

My intel wireless card was not found. Looking in the firmware directory on the install USB I found that several of the files showed a length of zero.  I found the non-free firmware files on the Debian site.  After downloading and copying to the firmware directory on the install USB, the driver for my wifi was identified and the install proceeded correctly.

The intel drivers in /firmware, are symbolic links to ../pool/non-free/f/.

If you have written the isofile to usb with recommended tools, they should not be of zero length, but around 50-100 bytes.
Command "ls -l", will show if they have been written as symlinks or just filenames.

If you have verified the downloaded iso-file, mount the iso-file and check: all files in /firmware should be symbolic links to ../pool/.

If you rewrite the usb with recommended dd or cp you will see that now is all drivers in /firmware are symbolic links.

Re: [Solved] 64 bit-some files in USB firmware directory have zero length

Th thanks for your help.  Usually I create USBs from Linux using dd, but this time I created the USB from Windows using Rufus.

Rufus has two write modes "ISO Image Mode" and "DD Image Mode".  The default is "ISO Image Mode", which I used.  After reading your response, I created a new USB using Rufus, but selecting "DD Image Mode".  The result: the symbolic links were not created correctly using "ISO Image Mode".  However, they were created correctly using "DD Image Mode".

I move the thread to "Basic Help & Support", and edit the Subject. Prepend [Solved].
Another time, you can do that yourself.
