For a few days now, when I try and shut down I get a dialogue box that says
Failed to run action "Shut Down"
Session manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown
I have been shutting down in the terminal window.
But how do I fix this?
Thank you and sorry for the questions.

According to your subjectline, you are running Debian 10 (oldstable). If you make an internet search for "Session manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown", you get quite many results. Solution can wary with display manager.
I would recommend you to first upgrade to Debian Stable (11).
If still error after upgrading, search internet with error messsage and your displaymanager.
A simple workaround, would be to edit your meny choice/desktop icon/panel button command so it start same shutdown as you use in the terminal

Hi @rbh
Thank you for your response. Sorry I did not get a notification, so I have only just seen it.
I actually did try and upgrade but somehow it broke the kernel and I could not boot.
So I put knoppix live on a USB and used that to grab all my files then installed MX Linux which runs perfectly (I believe it's based on Debian 11 anyway!)
