I have not tried it but I can't think of a reason it should not work. On this very computer I use i3 rather than the standard offering in BL.

You mean as the default desktop? I don't think you can; as I recall, the installer doesn't offer alternative desktops
You can install xfce4 afterwards and select it from the lightdm pull down menu without problems.
You must unlearn what you have learned.

You can install XFCE as root by:
sudo apt install xfce4
Additional xfce plugins are in the xfce4-goodies package.
