Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

If no-one objects in a day or two, maybe @rbh you could just go in and make your additions?

If ok, I do it on wednesday.

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

Thanks for your work rbh. I made a few small suggestions, but I'm not familiar with this anonymous interface so I'm not sure if they will will remain after I leave the page. Let's hope so. smile

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

@ rbh, 2 small fixes... "Or, you can allow all imports, open file ~/.cache/bunsen/bl-setup/log, to get the list of overwritten configfiles and use a diff program like meld..." should be config files, not all one word.

Also, the title should be "An Introduction to BunsenLabs". Although The BunsenLabs might be a good name for a band. big_smile

-edit- Ah, nm, you were just abbreviating the actual thread title, "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Lithium Desktop".

Great! cool

Just one thing left out:

rbh wrote:

To add before "Tint2 Panel"

Screen settings

BunsenLabs has a Screen layout editor:

arandr  Menu -> Preferences -> Display -> ARandR Screen Layout Editor
ARandr is  a  visual front end for xrandr.

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

Proposed rewrite of Section  Tint2

Tint2 panel

Tint2 is a simple but highly configurable panel. BL default configuration include a task list, a button to launch the jgmenu, a system tray (systray or notification area) with a clock, an audio mixer, a clipboard, and network-manager.
Hoovering the mouse over Tint2 icons, gives a "tooltip", with some status information.

The Tint2 configuration can be changed with the Tint2 Chooser script:
Menu -> Preferences -> Tint2 -> Tint2 Chooser
Alternative Tint2 configs are shipped with Bunsenlabs, and you can add your own to ~/.config/tint2/

Tint2 configuration: Menu -> Preferences -> Tint2 -> Edit Tint2s

Program (command) tint2conf is the gui editor, although using a text editor to modify an existing tint2rc is not difficult (and often easier).

Menu -> Help & Resources -> Tint2 provides links to various sources of help.

Default icons in Tint2 Systray
Clock - Tooltip gives weekday and date. Right mouse click, for setting alarms. Left mouse click gives mini calendar for a month
Mixer - Right click: Menu to settings, reload sound and launch the mixer. Left click: set the volume/mute and launch the mixer
Clipboard - Gives opportunity to reuse previous content from the clippboard.
Power Management - Right click: generell settings and "Presentation Mode"=temporarily disable power savings.
NetworkManager (nm-applet) - Right click: List of available and connected networks. Left click: temporarily disable network and  notifications. Information about current connection and edit connections.

Available at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O-l … RJWF-t9HgU (same as before), for comments.
I first created https://docs.zohopublic.com/file/pozgm4 … a0e8b63da4, but could not find out how to give commentary right for all with the link. Seems it can only be shared to given mail adresses.

I thought that some more details could be good to give new users...

I wish all a merry Christmas and happy new year!

Next year, I will write an "HowTo" for NetworkManager.

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

Thanks!

I've made a few suggestions. Perhaps the biggest point is that the Clock is not in the system tray, it's a separate item. All the system tray icons are set by the related installed applications and can not be configured by the user, other than uninstalling the application. OTOH the Clock is fully configurable in tint2rc.

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

Oh yes, @rbh, if you happen to spot anything in the installed documentation - ie the Man Pages, Help Menu or Bunsen Help Files - that could be improved, there's still time to get changes in the packages before the iso release.

Most of the man pages (not all) are auto-generated from the scripts' --help options when building the .deb files (many of them are in bunsen-utilities).
The help files are shipped in bunsen-docs.
The "Help and Resources" sub-menu is in bunsen-configs.

And Happy Christmas to you too, with all the best to everyone for 2022!

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

I saw in file /usr/bin/bl-tint2-pipemenu:

tint2conf removed here but still available from "Applications" menu as Settings > Panel Manager

I have a vage memory tint2conf was in the menu... has not noticed its absence as I start it from gmrun, maybe once a year...

Was it removed when it was not so stable? Time to add it back?

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

Tint2conf was almost useless to us because it didn't recognize our tint2 config files - the naming scheme was different. That has now been fixed on our end, but there might still be other issues, eg does tint2conf overwrite comments in the config file?

If anyone has the time to play with tint2conf and make sure there are no longer any such issues, then, sure, we could put it back in the menu.

Re: Addition to "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs.."

I'm not the expert, but I guess you should mention /etc/network/interfaces for sure, and maybe wicd and maybe even ceni as nm-applet GUI alternatives (don't get technical with me re: ncurses). Here's a scary link...
