[Solved] how to put link/launcher onto wallpaper?

Hi,

I am new to BL (yet fairly versed with Debian and Ubuntu). My question is:
how do I put a link or laucher onto the wallpaper, please?

I understand BL has not got a Desktop like Debian or Ubuntu, the surface is just the wallpaper. However, I see"SYSTEM INFO" and the following lines describing keyboard shortcuts right on the wallpaper. They must have gotten somehow there. But how?

Thanks, bunsencub

A good place to start is the Documentation section wink

Getting Started >> Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Lithium Desktop

The panel you are talking about is Conky, which is purely information. If you want a launcher you need to edit the Tint2 panel.

Re: [Solved] how to put link/launcher onto wallpaper?

@damo:thanks, but this openbox stuff is like a closed book I cannot open to me, despite your link. For example, I added to /usr/share/bunsen/skel/.config/bunsen/autostart this:

## Start Firefox
firefox &

After reboot, lo and behold, there was a firefox icon in the lower panel, but firefox opened without my doing. I would like that this firefox icon just sits there and does open only when I klick on it! How do I do this please?

You want to have icon on the desktiop, that links to program, startable by cklickin the icon. Like in windows and KDE/Gnome?

As openbox is not an Desktop Environment, that function is not available in default openbox. Why not try a while the Bunsen way...? Probabley you wont't miss the icons after a while. (I don't).

If you are determined to have icons, read this link [Solved] Displaying icons on desktop

Debian Wiki has a few lines https://wiki.debian.org/Openbox#Desktop_icons. When I had icons, I preferrred using package pcmanfm to handle them. see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PCManFM

There are also programs that will put program icons in a dock like "Plank" and "wbar".  Wbar has more control over positioning (meaning anywhere on the screen), while plank can go anywhere "around" the screen.

Download and try both!

You might try this (I have never tried it with OB but it does work with wms like IceWM).  Install SpaceFM and then add the following autostart  command "spacefm --desktop"   -- see: http://ignorantguru.github.io/spacefm/s … al-en.html

You should then have a new desktop managed by spacefm.  I believe the same works for pcmanfm.

Re: [Solved] how to put link/launcher onto wallpaper?

Thank you all! I understand there is no easy method to put a launcher on the wallpaper. Is it possible to put a launcher in the lower panel? Like I described in post #3 above for firefox, yet not as a running program BUT AS A KLICKABLE ICON (such as, e.g., the volume control in this panel)?

P.S. Personally, I don't mind to use <Super>+<W> to start firefox, but it is a nicety to my second user to have her beloved launcher, at least in the panel.

Edit: Sorry, I should have mentioned in the first place that I am running lithium-2.1-amd64.

Using pcmanfm or spacefm, is quite easy. Takes some minutes to configure.

Yes. You can configure tint2 (the panel), to carry "launchers".

Read "Introduction to the Bunsenlabs Lithium Desktop"
Tint2, has its own section some screens down.
There is the information how to configure tint2:
"Tint2 configuration:    Menu -> Preferences -> Tint2 -> Edit Tint2s"
and info: "Menu -> Help & Resources -> Tint2 provides links to various sources of help."

When you have opened your tin2 configfile in geany, search for "# Launcher - Panel item = L"
Make sure entry "launcher_item_app = /usr/share/applications/bl-www-browser.desktop" is not preceeded by "#". Search for entry "# Panel". Make sure it contains: "panel_items = PTSCPL".
Restart tint2 from the menu Preferences => Tint2.
disable launchers you do not want ot use.

Re: [Solved] how to put link/launcher onto wallpaper?

@bunsencub  PLEASE read the documentation I linked to!  All your questions so far are answered there.

The tint2 panel can have launchers, and there are several to choose from, from the Tint2 section in Menu > Preferences. Some already have a launcher for the browser. If you want you can even have a tint2 anywhere on the desktop containing just a single icon, which would emulate a desktop launcher.

This did the trick, the invisible apps are now visible in the panel, finally. Thank you very much!
Per default, the "L" is missing in this line, bad luck.
Now I have to find out how to rearrange the icons so that it looks not so crammed. Wish me luck, please!

Re: [Solved] how to put link/launcher onto wallpaper?

Found it:

# Panel
panel_items = PLTSCP

Now it looks very neat!
P.S. How do I mark a problem as "SOLVED" here, please?

I'll do it for you, just edit the subject title in your original post in the future.

Re: [Solved] how to put link/launcher onto wallpaper?

Thank you!
And an afterthought: replacing

launcher_item_app = /usr/share/applications/bl-www-browser.desktop

with

launcher_item_app = /usr/share/applications/firefox-esr.desktop

in tint2rc made the web browser in the panel more cleary visible for my co-user.
