Out of curiosity: When it does not print, what does /var/log/cups/error_log have to say on the matter?

Yea, I'm getting to the point I'm sure I'll hear: "OH, brother, don't tell me you actually bought a Brother printer!"
HP would have cost more but I bet I would not have had this problem.
I own an HP printer now and it has been flawlessly printing PDF's as their CUPS printer driver is more robust than Brother's. Perhaps your next printer should be an HP ![]()

My next printer WILL BE an HP. I switched from HP to Epson back in the 19's and was Epson all the way until I realized almost I always printed in B&W, but paying a fortune for colour cartridges so decided on a monochrome laser printer.
The difference in price between an HP and a Brother was about 35-40% less for Brother. It's been working fine since early BL days. Added 386 architecture and used Brother drivers from their site. Did not work in Buster. Downloaded the Debian file: printer-driver-brlaser worked fine for a while then OOPS!

Ah, funny you mention Epson...their drivers are a pita to set up on Linux. As for laser printers, HP does have some monochrome laser printer models around and I may eventually take the plunge to laser myself. I owned HP for a good few years after I ditched that old Brother multifunction I had...can't really go wrong with HP's.

Out of curiosity did you do a dist-upgrade after adding the i386 arch to pull in the i386 libs?

Yes but I could always get my Epson running.
HP has more than "some" monochrome laser printers:
HP Black & White LaserJet Printers
Mind you that's up there in the north, from me, options may vary in other countries.

To everybody in this thread ... Not that I am an expert on the linux printing, but I have certain experience ...
IMHO, this is not necessarily the printer problem, nor printer driver problem. One should have in mind that almost any printer driver (within CUPS) on linux almost always relies on ghostscript, i.e. on successful conversion of file sent to printer by ghostscript.
Without problematic file at hand, this discussion is mostly academic, but I have been in this situation more than few times:, printing of problematic pdf file was garbled (or not possible at all) on several printers: from Brother printer (home grade), to office grade Ricoh MP5000 series heavy-duty copier/scanner/printer. The problem was non-entirely-conforming-to-PDF problematic file, i.e. ghostscript wasn't able to process problematic PDF file.
The point being: acquiring new printer might not solve problem!
Being a freak(?), I investigated my problematic files directly with ghostscript ('gs' command), and could confirm problem. And most of the time I could repair with 'pdf2ps-ps2pdf' procedure, or with conversion with 'gs' itself (I forgot how, I googled a lot). Also, one could do (along nobody's suggestion):
$ convert -density 288 problematic.pdf unproblematic.pdf(play with '288' for different quality of resulting file).
Actually, I found 'gs' command I sometimes used command similar to:
$ gs -dSAFER -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -dNOCACHE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=unproblematic.pdf problematic.pdfSector: it is worth a try those commands, I would be interested if it improves situation?!

Will try all of the above. What is frustrating is ... I screen captured the PDF, saved as a jpg. That will not print, other images print.
desaturated the pdf.jpg - did not print.
I will try the stuff above.
And now I find I cannot print out my Canadian Passport Application PDF. Not that I am flying anywhere anytime soon BUT . . . .

Well I have tried everything. What iMBeCil said ↑↑↑↑↑, and what @nobody said earlier.
Went to the GIT site for "printer-driver-brlaser", grabbed the .ZIP file, followed the "make" instructions and even saw the list:
* Brother DCP-1510
* Brother DCP-1602
* Brother DCP-7030
* Brother DCP-7040
* Brother DCP-7055
* Brother DCP-7055W
* Brother DCP-7060D
* Brother DCP-7065DN
* Brother DCP-7080
* Brother DCP-L2500D
* Brother DCP-L2540DW
* Brother HL-1110 series
* Brother HL-1200 series
* Brother HL-L2300D series
* Brother HL-L2320D series
* Brother HL-L2340D series
* Brother HL-L2360D series
* Brother MFC-1910W
* Brother MFC-7240
* Brother MFC-7360N
* Brother MFC-7365DN
* Brother MFC-7840W
* Brother MFC-L2710DW
* Lenovo M7605D
Nope NADA! Did not print my Health Insurance bill (.pdf) nor my Personal.pdf (cell phone)
so I ripped that out and went back to the "Buster" printer-driver-brlaser file.
It prints out most other PDFs I have tested it on, but not all including pages with images embedded in it.
So I am at a loss.
LO - forget it, does not print. .txt files - NOT a problem
Ir worked with "Stretch" and should work with SID's printer-driver-brlaser as it has the same list seen above.
