Description: printer driver for (some) Brother laser printers
 CUPS filter driver supporting (some) Brother laser printer.

 This driver is known to support these printers:
 * Brother DCP-7030
 * Brother DCP-7065DN

 This package contains the CUPS filter driver for the supported laser printers.
Homepage: https://github.com/pdewacht/brlaser

Actually that driver supports more printers than that.

My printer can print: text files, LO files, and most PDF files.

However lately my bills that come in PDF forum will not print.

Older ones do so just fine or PDF's I create.

Any ideas / help appreciated.

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

Have you tried opening the PDFs in Document Viewer and printing from there?

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

^You can try to get an error message.
Terminal:

sudo journalctl -af

ENTER and leave open

Then you open an old, working pdf file and send it to the printer for printing. Copy the for this purpose in addition incoming messages.

Then do the same with one of the non-functioning pdf-files.
Compare the messages appearing here with the messages from above.

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

@Sector: to try to help you on your original question ... As your printer is printing most of the PDFs, I would blame the actual PDF which cannot be printed, instead of the printer driver.

I have had several such cases, and often the solution included performing a few conversion like 'pdf -> ps -> pdf', something like this:

$ pdf2ps unprintable.pdf tmp.ps
$ ps2pdf tmp.ps printable.pdf

and, voila, you should have the 'printable.pdf' file, hopefully printable on your printer. ('pdf2ps' and 'ps2pdf' are little programs included in ghostscript suite, which you should already have installed with linux printer system.)

Reason for this is that the pdf original creator (probably some home-made software) creates not-quite-proper pdf, and this can confuse printer driver (which in your case includes the so called 'ghostscript' 'filter' - don't ask, this is printer drivers and CUPS lingo I have been forced to understand some time ago).

Of course, I can offer you to inspect the PDF file in question by myself, but I suspect it includes sensitive information you are not willing to share with me (which is completely understandable).

and, no, bluez has nothing to do with printing a pdf, unless your printer is a bluetooth

So, unfortunately, no error message.  hmm
Have you, who does NOT print, taken a close look at their properties ?

ps: Ah, just what the good, old iMBeCiL says...   big_smile

You can always save the file and try printing from the command line:

lpr -P <printer name> file.pdf

<printer name> will be whatever you named the printer when you installed it.

Tried:
Evince
Atrilxpdf
muPDF
Okular - yes even installed that hoping
LO - Presentation I believe
ImageMagick

nothing will print out my phone bill nor my medical provider bill.
I have a feeling when Endenor or others come it it will be the same thing.

You can always save the file and try printing from the command line:

lpr -P <printer name> file.pdf

<printer name> will be whatever you named the printer when you installed it.

Files are either:

1 sent as attachments in email - open and print - normally it works
2. link to a file on the web - pop up says Open with [Atril] and print
- - or save to disk, then open and save.

 30 Mar 20 @ 17:45:21 ~
   $ lpr -P Brother-HL-1110 lprtest.txt
lpr: Brother-HL-1110: unknown printer

 30 Mar 20 @ 17:45:30 ~
   $

lpr is installed
2020-03-30-174741-S11.jpg

As I said: It will print text files, LO files and a lot of old PDFs.

IF I import the PDF to an LO file (Draw) and save it, then open it  - it will not print that file.
Printer does a "tick" sound and nothing

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

You can get the name of the printer with

lpstat -e

@Sector: to try to help you on your original question ... As your printer is printing most of the PDFs, I would blame the actual PDF which cannot be printed, instead of the printer driver.

I have had several such cases, and often the solution included performing a few conversion like 'pdf -> ps -> pdf', something like this:

$ pdf2ps unprintable.pdf tmp.ps
$ ps2pdf tmp.ps printable.pdf

and, voila, you should have the 'printable.pdf' file, hopefully printable on your printer.

Of course, I can offer you to inspect the PDF file in question by myself, but I suspect it includes sensitive information you are not willing to share with me (which is completely understandable).

did it twice

 30 Mar 20 @ 19:17:39 ~
   $ pdf2ps Personal.pdf personal-tmp.ps

 30 Mar 20 @ 19:18:45 ~
   $ ps2pdf personal-tmp.ps personal.pdf

tried Atril:  atril personal.pdf

printer went "tick" green light blinked a few times - stopped ... did not print

Rried a second time:

 30 Mar 20 @ 19:19:54 ~
   $ pdf2ps personal.pdf person-tmp.ps

 30 Mar 20 @ 19:21:57 ~
   $ ps2pdf person-tmp.ps personall.pdf

then: atril personall.pdf

printer went "tick" green light blinked a few times - stopped ... did not print

GRRRRR ... it's my phone bill not something I want public and the other my Health insurance.  big_smile

I think it has to do with the "limitations of the driver"  my actual printer is not listed in there ... but it is in SIDs driver.  And adding the "386 architecture" and running the drivers from brother does not work well with buster.  sad

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

How about printing a screenshot of the pdfs?

will not print.

Put screen captures in an OO file and try printing - no go.

Other images in an OO file print fine

I think I'm haunted.

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

I think printing is voodoo. In the past when I have got that ominous "click", I delete the printer and add it again. That usually works for me hmm

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

Those Brother drivers are hit or miss in my opinion, as once owned a Brother MFC465CN printer and the driver for that model sometimes segfaults when printing pdf's.

Re: Cannot print "some" PDF files

Yea, I'm getting to the point I'm sure I'll hear: "OH, brother, don't tell me you actually bought a Brother printer!"

HP would have cost more but I bet I would not have had this problem.
