Bluetooth on a laptop

Noob question

Thinkpad T420

How do i connect my bluetooth earphones or my phone with bluetooth?

I tried following instructions from here: https://wiki.debian.org/BluetoothUser
but when i run service bluetooth status i get this:

● bluetooth.service - Bluetooth service
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/bluetooth.service; enabled; vendor preset: en
Active: active (running) since Fri 2020-01-03 02:42:13 CET; 15min ago
     Docs: man:bluetoothd(8)
Main PID: 10631 (bluetoothd)
   Status: "Running"
    Tasks: 1 (limit: 4915)
   CGroup: /system.slice/bluetooth.service
           └─10631 /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd

Then i installed blueman, logged out and in to get in on my taskbar.
I clicked on turn on bluetooth, and the icon changed, but the indicator on my laptop didnt turn on.
When i click on setup new device, i get a window saying no adapters found.
When i click on adapters, i get a blank window.

I dont really know what to do from here.
Please help

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

What makes you think you have bluetooth on this laptop?

What is the laptop make and model? Are there bios options to disable bluetooth? Can you post up the terminal output of 'lspci' and 'lsusb' and 'rfkill list' (you will probably need to install the rfkill package).

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

It is Lenovo Thinkpad T420 (4236)

I thought i have bluetooth because there is a bluetooth indicator next to wifi and disk usage indicator.

But now i think this model doesnt have it, because those commands dont say anything about bluetooth.

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

Looking at the specs for your machine it would seem that some models didn't ship a bluetooth card with them.

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

USB bluetooth dongles are cheap as chips if that's any consolation.

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

It is weird though that a blue inidcator would come on.
The bluetooth could be "hidden" inside the WLAN module afaik. Or switched off in BIOS.

This page says nothing about bluetooth, but the linked notebookcheck article does (optional bluetooth). That article could help to find out what exact model you have, and if it comes with bluetooth or not.

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

Thanks for all replies, it seems my model doesnt have bluetooth.
Maybe i buy a bluetooth dongle in the future, i will use wired earphones until then.

Would something like this work without too much need for setting up drivers?

Hama devices seem to work for 'buntu and RPi, so presumably it will be OK on Debian.

Re: Bluetooth on a laptop

Had issues with on board bluetooth on Acer Chromebook (Debian). Apparently it was a known issue.  solved it by buying the dongle below. Works like a charm!
