On which side of the space bar do you hit the most.

I use almost all the time, my right thumb finger to hit the space bar. So it's the right side of the bar that is almost generally used. What side of the space bar do you hit the most?

I am upto something here. wink

Re: On which side of the space bar do you hit the most.

It depends on what side of the key board the last letter I typed is one. Both my thumbs hover over the space bar while typing.

Lol ... never thought about it, though while typing just now (yep, right thumb it seems.)but am laying down with the laptop on the floor, kind of an awkward typing position.

Someone is making conversation. wink

Both when typing, but left side get more hits in total because Super+Space launches menu & application search for me. (I use Whiskermenu.)

I don't know.
It's the only key large enough for me not having to think about it.

At home it's left thumb, since I tend to rest my left palm on the keyboard as shown on my now decommissioned G15:

At work it's a mixed bag, sometimes I hit space bar with left and sometimes with right thumb.

Bit of both really, more in favour of the right hand thumb when heavy typing and center of the space bar.

How about using just the Super key for menu? Woudn't that be much easier? The config is right there in autostart.

The reason I posted this question is because I had a weird keyboard mod (not that I can actually do it, but just a design in my head). With my idea of typing with the least amount of travel, reaching the arrow keys seem to be a hard movement for me. Yes, it's true. I like vim's hjkl movement, but almost all GUI applications do not follow that. There is an article on remapping CapsLock+ HJKL to arrow keys, but CapsLock is remapped to Ctrl and I seem to love it.

How about if we the space bar was split and the left half was used as a modifier for most keys - ThayKey+hjkl can be the arrow keys. ThatKey+ ionm can be home/end/pgup/pgdw.  ThatKey+other keys can be a lot of things that'll make life easier for lazier guys like me. big_smile

As for which side of the space bar I hit more often, honestly never given it much thought. Probably the left if I count the Super+Space keybind (switches window layout in my dwm or spectrwm setups), but with regular document typing I'd say it's about 50/50 in terms of which thumb I use, though I tend to hit the bar dead center (or close, at least on laptops) more often than not. Probably conditioned from my time using a cheapo netbook in the past where hitting the bar on its extreme left/right side wouldn't even register a press due to the keyboard's shoddy build.

Damn! When two people get the same original idea in two eras. yikes :glasses:

Ah, the modern ones come with split space bars. I think they still make a good appeal to ergonomists. There seems to be a handful of ergonomic mechanical split keyboards with split spacebars available in the market.

Re: On which side of the space bar do you hit the most.

Back in the mid 2000's i used an ergo keyboard for awhile, back then i was just punching simple commands into spreadsheets and wyse terminals. The data entry ladies enjoyed the benefits of the ergo keyboards, probably not all that beneficial but they were supposed to alleviate strain on the wrists and hands to prevent CPS, carpel tunnel syndrome.

Oh, there have more names now for the 'risk factors' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y20tuttErCY.
Btw, this keyboard is not in my watch list. smile

Honestly, I do feel some fatigue with the current layout which is why I looking at various remapping so make my typing go with as much less travel as possible. But that doesn't eliminate the fatigue from the arm and wrist posture. Haven't used any ergo keyboard to say conclusively that it good, but the designs seem ergonomically helpful.

It's just so weird that they are so damn costly.

It is an ortholinear keyboard (all keys are the same size, and in a grid), and the model of that one in particular is called an ID75, there also exists an XD75 as an alternative.

These aren't cheap, but I haven't really felt a need to get another keyboard ever since I got this. Although that's a lie... I did buy ANOTHER one of these lol

Re: On which side of the space bar do you hit the most.

Can't comment about the keyboard experience with use. However, since the number pad and other keys are in the middle and the alphabet keys are split, I'd say that it's a much better position for the wrists and arms to be during general typing.
