Display problem 1 - Bunsenlabs Helium (Debian 4.9.189-3[Resolved]

Before I start, let me say that I did a search and could not find this problem reported elsewhere. I did see one report where the user started with a thank you. I would like to repeat his opening. I do appreciate those who work diligently to put together this distribution and those who look at all the problem reports.

Thank you!!

I was running Bensenlabs Dueterium for many months on my Dell Latitude E6510. I have a VGA monitor attached to give me a large screen to work from. The software became corrupted, so I figured it was time to upgrade to the Helium distribution. For the most part the upgrade went ok, with the exception that I am having some display problems. I had two types of problems:

1) My secondary VGA monitor is not displaying properly.

2) My 'konsole' screens on my laptop screen are not displaying properly.

This report describes problem #1 only.

When I bring up my the Helium distribution, my laptop screen displays the login window, but my monitor displays only the bunsenlabs background and a horizontal bar on the top which shows the hostname, time, date, and a menu to turn off or restart the PC.

After logging in, the monitor displays a horizontal bar showing each desktop, but there are no icons shown for any of the desktops and if select a desktop, no application windows appear even though the autostart starts up a number of Konsole windows. Also, the mouse pointer appears in the laptop window, but not on the monitor.

While working I found that my pointer goes out of range on the laptop screen and can be found on the monitor. By moving the mouse, I can display the pointer either on the laptop or the monitor, but not both. If I right-click the mouse, a menu will pop up on the current screen, regardless of whether the mouse pointer is on the laptop screen or the monitor screen. So it looks like the system is detecting the monitor, but it is not scaling properly. If I start an application from a menu when the mouse is in the monitor screen, the application window will come up on the laptop screen, but not on the monitor screen.

In the past, the o/s has detected the monitor and scaled correctly, yield the identical images on both screens except for the different scaling. I suspect the current setting on the monitor (VGA 1366 x 768) is incorrect, but I don't know how to reset it or what the setting should be. I believe I can find the correct setting by connecting my other laptop and observing the VGA setting when the monitor is working correctly.

I will update this again later.

Jim A.

Update:

When I use my other laptop, the monitor setting is VGA 1366 x 768, matching the setting of my working laptop. So it looks like the scaling on my working laptop, using Helium, is wrong somehow, but I don't have a clue as to why.

Default is Bunsenlab Linux notset up to show icons on the desktop.

You can move the mouse from left to right, from your laptop screen to your external monitor, then your system is set up so. If you want something else, use the "Screen Layot Editor", arandr. Menu => Preferenses => Display =>.. You can set up that both screens show the same thing.
If you want the setting to be loaded at startup, save editros setting, open the script, copy the settings and past in autostart, replacing eventual old settings.

What programs are set to autostart? From /etc/xdg/autostart, or ~./config/openbox/autostart or  ~./config/autostart/?

Can you startthe program in an terminal?

Under Menu => Help and Resources, there is quite good help to get.

Btw, I think it is morethan a year ago the repo for deuterium closed down. It is better to update than continue use outdated software.

@rbh

Your response is perfect for me. Thank you.

Let me explain. I have been using a duplicate image in the past, only because in the past I could not get a dual screen version like I now have. When I tried out the implementation yesterday, I did not realize what I had. Your explanation has me on board and I am VERY happy with what I now have.
