You are not logged in.
This is with Debian 9 that I have recently built up - been installed for what seems like forever.
There is no network manager and no lightdm, no graphical login manager, I log in like I did with Debian 8 from the command line prompt.
With [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F2]: I get login for Sector 11, add my password and end up starting another desktop session.
Any help appreciated.
I think it is also tied into [Alt]+[F2] or the command in OB:
gksu thunar
the password window pops up and I keep getting "Wrong password"
I can however open a terminal and:
03 Jun 19 @ 15:30:48 ~
$ sudo su -
root@d67:~# thunar
{at this point I close Thunar as root}
root@d67:~# exit
logout
03 Jun 19 @ 15:31:23 ~
$
works just fine ... but I need to drop to a "tty" and kill the GUI ...
no can do. Been Startpaging for days.
Any help appreciated.

EDIT: Just logged into Debian 8 and while "gksu thunar" works as advertised - terminal or OB Menu, dropping to tty2 does the same. Login for S11 and it beings up another desktop session.
? ? ?
How can I kill the desktop session and be at root in tty2?

Which graphical manager are you using? For example, with lightdm I do
damo@bl-laptop ~ $ sudo su -
[sudo] password for damo:
root@bl-laptop:~# systemctl stop lightdm.service

None - I login directly from tt1
If I do [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F4] I get a black screen:
Debian GNU/Linux 9 d67 tty4
d67 login:
So since there is no graphical login manager what would I type?

Why are you trying to log in as root for an Xsession? Login as user and run 'startx', no?
Try 'pkexec thunar' instead of 'gksu thunar' once you're logged in.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

Gaa! Abort!
Can you backup and re-install, and create a log of the install?

5.4.4.1. System Freeze During the PCMCIA Configuration Phase seems relevant.
