No space left on device

Hi there guys,

To make it as brief as possible,  /home has a lot of space but when I tried to cp -R directory newdirectory I got a ton of "no space left on device" errors.

I am trying to duplicate the directory named main into the same parent directory as the directory named dev, so I'm using the command:

cp -R main dev

When running this, I received a shower of this:

cp: cannot create directory 'dev/server-data/resources/[addoncars]/a8lfsi': No space left on device
cp: cannot create directory 'dev/server-data/resources/[addoncars]/mb18': No space left on device
cp: cannot create directory 'dev/server-data/resources/[addoncars]/wraith': No space left on device
cp: cannot create directory 'dev/server-data/resources/[addoncars]/ford34': No space left on device
cp: cannot create directory 'dev/server-data/resources/[addoncars]/LSCS-Pack-bkup': No space left on device

cp: cannot create directory 'dev/to be installed_': No space left on device

Here's some important stuff:

Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this issue?

Re: No space left on device

Well, taking into account this:

web1@server:~/fivem$ pwd
/var/www/clients/client1/web1/home/schwimserver2/fivem
web1@server:~/fivem$

and that:

web1@server:~/fivem$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
udev 32911584 0 32911584 0% /dev
tmpfs 6589804 75700 6514104 2% /run
/dev/nvme0n1p3 20026236 17026100 1959804 90% /
tmpfs 32949004 4 32949000 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 5120 4 5116 1% /run/lock
tmpfs 32949004 0 32949004 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/nvme0n1p2 498532 32640 435633 7% /boot
/dev/nvme0n1p1 522228 136 522092 1% /boot/efi
/dev/nvme0n1p4 901907680 73652 855996716 1% /home
web1@server:~/fivem$

I strongly suspect that you are trying to copy stuff not on '/home' partition which apparently has plenty of space, but on '/' partition, because, '/var' and similar are not in '/home', but in '/'. And '/' partition (mounted on '/dev/nvme0n1p3') has only approx 2GB left. This is probably because you have symbolic links somewhere inside your '/home/fivem' path, pointing somewhere to '/var/www...' which is located on '/dev/nvme0n1p3' partition with small amount of free space. Or perhaps, your dir structure with symbolic links is even more complicated ..

You can test this by issuing following 'cp' command:

cp -R main /home/fivem/dev

Or this one, which is much more precise:

$ cp -R /var/www/clients/client1/web1/home/schwimserver2/fivem/main /home/fivem/dev

NOTE: be careful, above is based on my (educated) guess about your directory and partition(s) layout. I might be wrong. Please, check the commands you are issuing.

Postpone all your duties; if you die, you won't have to do them ..
