Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Hello

I am trying to install bunsenlabs on my laptop and everytime I boot from the usb stick it goes straight into live desktop and I can't chose the installation option as the menu is not shown.

Redownloaded the iso, checksum is okay.
Burned with Rufus3.4 with iso mode and also with dd mode, but it did not fix the issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot in advance and kind regards

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Would be good to provide more information on your end. Such as system specs, which version of Bunsenlabs (even architecture 32/64b-etc.)bios/mbr, uefi/gpt? With almost nothing to go on, it's not worth people's time/effort to try endless speculation and shots in the dark.

Also this isn't meant in any derogatory way towards you but if you're really interested in gnu/Linux, it's a good idea to provide at least some meaningful information for others to try and help.

so the live desktop works perfectly?
that's weird.
what if you reboot after that?
do you have a slow monitor & a fast bios? do you have a weird keyboard? tried unplugging it before booting?

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Sure, I can deliver more information. Sorry I rushed the creation of this topic yesterday night because I was tired.

Device: Dell XPS 15 (9550)
CPU: I7 6700HQ
RAM: 16GB
BIOS Mode:UEFI
Secure Boot: disabled

Burned the ISO to USB Stick with UNetBootin, which didn't change anything.
Also tried Gpt, DD Mode and ISO mode in Rufus.

Installed Ubuntu now for the moment, which worked just fine.

Is there any way I can run the installer from a tty or from a terminal ?

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

From the Bunsenlabs gnu/Linux install page. Links to a Debian resource for making bootable usb's which says.

Please note, that Debian advises not using unetbootin for this task. It can cause difficult-to-diagnose problems with booting and installing, so is not recommended.

Tried the method described there? Used to use a windows freeware program, correction was called iso workshop, been a long time but worked very well and was a big fan of snapfiles.com freeware sections, then went to straight dd, now mostly use the simple cp command method recommended by Debian.

Fact BL boots to live session and seemingly runs fine, to me indicates a problem with how you're creating the install media.

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Is there any way I can run the installer from a tty or from a terminal ?

Not as such. You *could* do a debootstrap install of Debian from the live session & then netinstall Bunsen on top.. it's last resort stuff though.

Try a netinstall of Debian?
Instructions here to install Bunsen using the netinstall script.
Assuming a Debian netinstall works.

@BLizgreat! OP also tried both modes in Rufus, which is pretty well equivalent to using plain dd.  I know nobody here recommends Rufus out loud, I've always had 100% success with it though.  It's basically a freeware graphical front-end for "approved" methods.  Dunno why but people see unetbootin mentioned *once* they always seem to pounce on it and blame it regardless that the poster tried other things too...

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Sure tried other things outside of the described method. Don't know about Rufus, saw unetbootin specifically advised against,  was the reason for mentioning it.

It's booting, apparently running live session well enough, +1 weird.

Been so long, forgot what it can be like jumping initial hurdles to even trying gnu/Linux. If someone is doing so via windows. Now that you've got a Ubuntu install working might try the method using the cp command while creating the BL usb.

Would be really curious about any differences in the thumb drives lay out when created by things like Rufus and Unetbootin VS any created with cp too. Might install gparted and examine the drive before/after? Hopefully in the end works out, a distro like BL is worth some extra effort. smile

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Indeed, though I've seen the reverse happen often enough booting install & not live, Debian-Installer boots a deliberately generic kernel, it's not the same as what's used in the live session, at least not with 32 bit anyhow.  FWIW Rufus uses "dd for windows" in the background in the dd mode, which is a windows port of gnu dd in my experience it "Yust Verks!(TM)"

What I've not seen before is the DVD boot menu being skipped, I'm thinking that *might be* EFI related, the plain netinstall image doesn't have a live session option though, so if EFI is doing weirdness & causing the default to just get booted instead of showing the menu, that would boot straight into the Debian graphical installer.

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Have had dd from straight gnu/nix fail in creating a bootable iso/USB several times. Done the process enough, know I did it correctly and didn't work. Got rid of windows years ago. For a long time been using the cp method as described.

Somewhere along the way at times have taken to creating a new msdos partition table with gparted, on a thumb drive, wiping the whole thing with intent of starting fresh from scratch. The layouts created on USB drives by a given thing can be strange to behold. Done speculating and by this point probably not helping the OP, so gonna shut it.

Cure there is _usually_ to dd the thing blank if=/dev/zero first (or in Windows the "clean" option in the cmd line partitioner) so you don't potentially still have GPT info at the back end of it past where whatever.iso finished. Didn't used to be an issue when you could rely on an MBR partition table, though there were still the oddball old USBs which'd be set up floppy style data layout, those would still sometimes misbehave.  It's also why Rufus has the non-dd mode.

If I could rely on the OP having an optical drive I'd say "Burn a real disk, be sure to pick burn image rather than make a data disk" it's way less of a minefield than USB sticks.

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Hey guys

Thanks for all your help.
First of all I quickly wanted to mention: I am not completly new to linux.
I like bunsenlabs very much and some year ago crunchbang was my main os. Until Uni made me switch over to windows. I already have a multiple (special purpose) VMs with different distros and if I didn't prefer bunsenlabs I would have been satisfied with something else already.

I also thought about NetInstall, which would come with the benefit that I could turn on secureboot again.

Well, I didn't know that rufus was thaaat unpopular. I have never had any problem with it before.
I am home now and I can do a dd and cp on my desktop pc.

Will try this too, even tho I am not too confident that it will work with one of these methods.
Also I have multiple USB sticks I can put images on and when I get this working I will quickly compare how they are formatted when using different tools and post it here @BLizgreat!

Unfortunately this laptop does not have a optical drive anymore.

I will spend some time and try to figure this out today, will keep you posted!
Thanks for all your help so far smile

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

^ Thanks, would be curious to see whatever differences, in using xyz to make a bootable USB VS another.

Just to clarify this isn't a vm install?

No worries, how long anybody has been using gnu/Linux is mostly a moot point. New or old to me doesn't mean a lot, think I could dork with gnu/nix for the rest of my life and would never be a guru.

That Debian resource on how to create bootable media with cp/dd is about as clear as mud imo. Think they could've done much to improve on the descriptions, shrugs.

Don't know about(anything about) Rufus but as shown the Debian page does specifically recommend not using unetbootin.

My great face + palm moment came when I said, why doesn't he just follow the methods outlined on the Debian page? Errrr, again are clear as mud and for someone using Windows, not much relevant?

Would definitely like to see this figured out, you get BL installed, others get to see what the cause of the weirdness is, win for everybody. smile

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Okay this has been a very interesting day with a lot of mysteries.

This was a dualboot install on my laptop, no VM for once.

I got the installer to work at some point today and everything is good now and bunsenlab is already more or less set up to look and behave like I want it to (like crunchbang not like bunsenlabs xD)

The way the stick that finally worked was created is via cp in a kali vm.
But it didn't work at first try either! I rebootet without any USB devices attached (except the stick) and all of a sudden it magically worked.
I was able to reproduce that again. So that seem to be what is causing the problems.

==================
Comparison between different methods of boot media creation:
After I installed everything I "burned" the image in all different ways and made a screenshot of each one in gparted.
And also tried to boot all of them. And no method worked. Not even cp, which worked before.
I have 4 sticks of them (excat same type), which I used for this test. (original these were Windows installations sticks that came with dell laptops)
Something is super strange with these usb sticks. None of the methods worked.
I also noticed can't attach any of them into a VM.

But I don't think thats of any help, since something is strange with these kind of usb stick.

Also with Etcher, Rufus GPT DD Mode, Rufus GPT Iso, CP, DD all gave me a Block size error.
Unetbootin, Win32 Disk Imager, Rufus Mbr iso mode all gave no Block size error.

I then tried again with another type/model of usb stick and it worked.
This is a totally normal usb stick you can buy at a store --> Verbatim Store n Go.

Interestingly I also can mount this one in a vm.
I did 'sudo cp bl_Helium-4-amd64.iso /dev/sdb;sync' in a kali vm to burn it.
This works.
Also tried the same stick with Rufus GPT Table + DD mode which did also go straight into live mode.
==================
So here is my conclusion:
The TEST IS INCONCLUSIVE
The stupid usb stick was at fault. Somehow they don't work at all with Bunsen.
These sticks are the ones I had laying around with live systems on them and used them all the time without any problem.
And I am pretty sure I did installations with them before, just never a bunsenlab system.

And with a regular USB Stick it works BUT ONLY with the cp method and if no other usb device is attached to the laptop. At the moment I can not make any sense of this.

So if someone is reading this at a later point:
Do a 'sudo cp bl_Helium-4-amd64.iso /dev/sdb;sync' when you can and try different sticks if you have a problem.
For users with windows only: no idea what actually works. I would need to try all kind of programs with the working usb stick.

I am so done with this by now... And hey my system is working smile

It's really good to have the feedback smile And glad you got it sorted.

Would be really interesting to know how the Linux commands fare using the Windows subsystem for Linux.
Sometime I must get around to installing it

Re: Unable to install - directly boots into live mode, no menu

Whoa, you definitely aren't a quitter. Really dug in, until you got things to work, BIG props fellow nixer. smile

As to the overall situation, I'm at a loss to explain it, anything that pops in head would just be groundless speculation. Couple though, possibly a bios thing(that series of uefi), wondered if CSM(legacy) is disabled in your bios/uefi, fastboot in the windows os, been several years since having to dork with uefi/gpt, so am hazy on it. Do remember those last were associated with problems installing.

That's a beast of a laptop you got there. smile Can't help but wonder if it's a quirk with the installer too. Ubuntu didn't have any such issues? Wouldn't want to start suggesting xyz, you've already went above and beyond the call of duty in this.

Still uncovered useful info from the time/effort you devoted. Like maybe people will need to unplug other USB devices sometimes, to get a successful install.

For the record VM, you used virtualbox? Have another thread about install methods for people using Windows and thought of using a vm, as a way to create install media, after a bit of general test driving. Don't so much feel confident in recommending virtualbox to someone.

So thanks for sticking it out and posting what you found. VICTORY! smile

Hey still good to know, with all the feverish typing on this keypad, the obvious also escaped comment. He pointed out trying another USB drive can/might help.
