Re: Experimental BunsenLabs Lithium

Thank you Edrychwch !
Just a question... would it be better to make the first boot (after installing Helium) directly on tty, so no Helium desktop configuration would be even set ?
Would a 'pure' Lithium desktop configuration be different than a one first configured by a Helium session ?
Regards !

I am installing the experimental Lithium atop a Devuan Beowulf dev install... place your bets, will it run or fail spectacularly?

Re: Experimental BunsenLabs Lithium

^ most likely fail due to systemd dependancies. Elogind has gotten a lot better in devuan though. Im init agnostic, i just prefer to use devuan as they have some packages in their repositories that debian dont, for instance task-console-productivity https://pkginfo.devuan.org/stage/ascii/ … an1.9.html

Re: Experimental BunsenLabs Lithium

Networking is broken on that box now, will resolve shortly.

UPDATE: Was a seeming conflict between NetworkManager and wicd (which Devuan uses). Disabled NM and everything is awesome.

I think the only major direct systemd involvement with BL packages was bunsen-exit, but the latest version should also support elogind.
The BL packages are nearly all text files and images, so ought to work on Devuan.

As for the Debian packages in the default list pulled by bunsen-meta-all there are very likely to be some that would need to be taken out.

@bigbenaugust if you hit any other issues after NM, please post! We'd like BL to be as generic and modular as possible.

My problem is finding the Beowulf testing iso.
Can someone point me to it?

To your point, there is no Beowulf iso. Looks like one has to install Ascii and then do a dist-upgrade to Beowulf.

@johnraff: After fixing the NM issue, the Thinkpad screen brightness controls didn't work, and since it is my primary workstation and this is work time and I didn't really have time to rabbit-hole all the way down (eudev/dbus/X/ACPI/etc.), I re-imaged it again with Buster and am installing Lithium on it right now.  I might re-try the whole thing on my home machine.

But it's very functional with experimental Devuan 3 as a base. I have also done it with MX and AntiX underneath and they work too.

Thank you for that sir. It is no wonder that I could not find any information on devuan site and the forums were not at all clear.

Thanks for the feedback:

I've had varying success with hardware keybinds on a Thinkpad - eg on some Debian-based distros the mic mute key works, others not. I'm not sure if there's any guarantee Debian Buster will work any better than Devuan for brightness. Fingers crossed...

When I have time I'll test that Thinkpad with Lithium and see if there are any tweaks we can ship to improve things (if necessary).

I was a little over-optimistic about BL's lack of systemd: there are some bits here and there that use it - like the "CLI" grub boot option - but the core functions should survive without.

Im not aware that there is one, you need to upgrade from stable ascii I believe?

That is how I did it anyhow, this is what the testing sources.list should look like.

deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged/ beowulf contrib non-free main

deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged/ beowulf-security main non-free contrib

deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged/ beowulf-updates main non-free contrib

edit: there is a mini.iso from searching the devuan forum but needs a rework. Would be a full netboot type image install i would say.

Yeah, some things work in MX and not AntiX with the same base. If I were to guess, it might be a udev issue with user hardware permissions.

At least on the P50 in my cube, it's 100% with Buster and BL. Brightness, volume, and all. When I get the P50 done, I'll switch back and put Devuan on this W530 for fun. When I get time for fun. wink

Thanks, I will go the upgrade route next week, when I get a decent break from uni.

bunsenify the xfce4

There are two things this might mean:

1) Start from a basic BunsenLabs install, change window manager to xfwm4 and add any other xfce apps you think you need.
The changes made in the way a Lithium session starts up were intended to make option 1) easier.

Add a full xfce4 session (not tested by me, but I will. This sounds fun...)

https://wiki.debian.org/Xfce#Install_Xf … led_system

Had already done this on helium with no issues at all. Now the next step is to upgrade the system to lithium. Will do so soon.

The one thing that supports the usefulness of systemd, is the possibility to restrict an application from using too much RAM or virtual memory. This is crucial when using BunsenLabs cdsized live in a machine with just 1 GB RAM:

$ systemd-run --user -p MemoryHigh=940M x-www-browser

and/or MemoryMax with a slightly higher value for the same. Maybe MemoryHigh=940M (megabytes) is too much for a machine with just one gigabyte, but I don't know of a good method to calculate a reasonably correct parameter value.

I discovered these systemd options the other day when looking at discussions about Linux slowing to a crawl with limited-RAM environments and no swap. The instructions are also at the systemd.resource-control manpage.

I cannot say for certain whether it works as advertised, but I'm thankful that these options exist. At least lately, it's been possible to quit Firefox more easily via OpenBox when the browser starts slowing down and causes the system to heavily spin the optical drive to request something.

I do not know of any other tweaks that would restrict RAM for individual apps.

Removing multi-process support in Firefox, and setting other optimisations to the browser also help.

Re: Experimental BunsenLabs Lithium

^Thanks for those hints. I have an old laptop with 1GB RAM (and some swap space) that I use to test the CD iso, and yes it does sometimes freeze up if I use Firefox too heavily. When I get to testing the Lithium CD build I'll try those options.

High praise indeed! Thanks damo. smile

-edit- I don't think we have the matching desktop theme set in skel yet, but if you switch your desktop wallpaper to either the logo or no-text-logo version of the login wall, which are available in Nitrogen, ~/Pictures/wallpapers/bunsen/default/BL-Lithium*, the transition from login to desktop becomes pretty seamless. It's cool.

The BL-Lithium light and dark themes for GTK, Openbox and notifications are also included, but need to be set manually. They are not quite finalized, hence them not being set as default yet (we're still using Beam for both the installer and default desktop). Use them with our Papirus-Bunsen icon sets (bluegrey light and dark), or with Paper for possibly lighter RAM usage, or, of course, with the icon set of your choice.

Mod note, we should split intel config discussion off of this thread (I can't do it ATM. Mind strong, body is flipping wore out ATM).

[mod response] Done.

Re: Experimental BunsenLabs Lithium

New version of bunsen-utilities (10.1-1) uploaded.

In particular, BLOB has seen some attention - please try it out and see if you can find a bug!

And, bunsen-configs (10.4.4-1) - jgmenu theme set to Lithium by default, BLOB moved to "BL Utilities".
(Run 'bl-user-setup --refresh' to get your user configs reset to the new package defaults.)

Also, removed that tricky Xorg Intel config snippet.
