Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Graphics Controller (Rev 09) HDMI out issue

As in inveterate distro hopper just jumped back into BL.  Was running Mint - very nice, but a little to preconfigured for me.  I notice my CPU runs about 30 degrees C cooler in BL, 56C as compared to 80-90C - that's significant!

One issue.  As a frequenter of hotels I often want to hook up my laptop (Thinkpad Carbon X1 1st Gen) to the TV HDMI for movies and suchlike.   Now with mint it worked out of the box and I could configure using whatever display manager is in mint.  Here I can use AR&R and get output to the TV - but the output is poor - moving windows results in "ghost" windows, eventually the external monitor freezes, and also any attempt to show video results in sound output but no vision.

I'm wondering if this is an intel driver issue - what the differences might be between BL and Mint in this regard, and what I can do to improve this.

Re: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Graphics Controller (Rev 09) HDMI out issue

this is by no means a new device, but lenovo's naming scheme makes it difficult to search for it specifically.
the official page states "intel® HD Graphics 4000 (integrated)".
i notice that any such information is missing from your lspci output.

quick searches reveal nothing of interest (except for one 5 years ago where downgrading the kernel helped).

maybe you are missing some intel firmware?

maybe you need to disable compositing?

thanks ONN...

I'll try searching for intel firmware and seeing if that helps before looking more deeply.

Update - I already have the latest xserver-xorg-intel and the latest firmware-linux-nonfree according to apt

I actually have this working better now, not sure how :-)

Still tends to leave ghost images but I can run video full screen through HDMI out with no issues.
