We're inheriting the Thunar preferences from CrunchBang and I'd like to check what people really want.
Specifically:
View>Location Selector: Does anybody prefer "Pathbar Style"? I change that to "Toolbar Style" immediately...
Preferences>Behaviour: I always change it to "Double click" - what do most people prefer?
Any other settings you always change?
I know this is trivial stuff, but those two settings annoy me every time I open a new install.

I also change the location selector to toolbar style; it just looks cleaner and is faster to navigate with. I prefer single-click; I usually shorten the hover-to-select interval, but that's just me.
I realize there may be advantages to the double-click behavior, depending on mouse/trackpad hardware, but I always change whatever file manager I have installed to single-click because that's what I've become accustomed to.

Sorry, but I am a single-clicker.
Offline
Single click.
Location selector 'cos it takes fewer clicks to move to the top of the filesystem tree.
Offline
Single-click; tree view; pathbar; detailed list.
Thunar preferences are absolutely the first thing I change after an install. (Apart from making the terminal BIGGER of course )

I use pathbar style because it looks cleaner and you can hit / or Ctrl+L to open a Location window, but that's not an issue for me. Neither is the sidepane view.
I think this has already been fixed, but the first time you open Thunar hidden files are hidden, right? This is what I'd expect, though I can see the argument for showing users that there are other files and folders in their Home directory.
The one that drives me nuts though is not enabling thumbnails by default, though, again, I can see the argument against it.
I don't care what you do at home. Would you care to explain?

I always make it like:
- View->Location Selector->Toolbar Style
(because I can type there, and I can type '.' and enter hidden dir, instead of "^H, go to hidden dir, ^H" sequence)
- View->Side Pane->Shortcuts
(can easily add my preferred places)
- View->Statusbar (checked)
- View->Menubar (checked)
- View->Show Hidden Files (unchecked)
(too much hidden stuff which is normally not needed, at least not in everyday work)
- View->View as Icons
- Double Click to activate items
(can't really tell why ... I remember having single-click on Windows 98 ... must be a habit)
TBH, I don't complain and I don't mind if settings will be just opposite to what I expect ... I set it once, and keep it that way. It is no that difficult, and - honestly - I don't install BL every day, every three hours
My 2 cents ...

Please keep them coming, anyone who has an opinion on this!
There seems to be no strong majority in any particular direction at the moment, and if that remains the case let's just keep the status quo...

single click, pathbar, shortcuts, icon view.

Ah, that's the nice thing with being able to configure things to one's likings - most people (who knows how to) do!
My File Manager (Thunar) fine-tunings:
[View]: [View as Icons] → [View as Detailed List]
[Edit]: [Preferences...]: [Display]: Default View [Last Active View] → [Detailed List View]
[Edit]: [Preferences...]: [Display]: Date [Today] → [YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS]
[View]: [Side Pane]: [Shortcuts] → [Tree]
as I finally discovered that what I'd been missing actually is selectable
[View]: [Configure Columns...]: Column Sizing ☑→☐ Automatically expand columns as needed
because I sometimes view things deep down, and then the "Name" column stays expanded
(Have I missed a setting somewhere? I like it, but I want it to shrink back too!)
Regarding the [View]: [Location Selector]
I've kept it at [Pathbar Style] (with the "buttons" - confusing naming [O.o] ).
The [Toolbar Style] (with the "text field") is nicer, but (most of the time) it's "convenient to just click things".
I keep my [Preferences]: [Behavior] on default single-click (as I've gotten used to it, and it kind of annoys me when it doesn't behave as I've gotten used to).
I may change my mind upon no further notice, e.g. I used to set
[View] → ☐→☑ Show Hidden Files
but then I noticed the Ctrl+h shortcut, so now I usually use that instead.
When I tweaked default Debian 8 LXDE, I set PCManFM to
use single-click (as I've got used to it when using #!)
not treat backup files as hidden
always show full file names (annoying thing that keeps following me from my Windows times - I want to know whether I'm about to delete something important, damn it!)
show icons of hidden files shadowed
hide expander on empty or locked folder
Yeah, I keep notes on my prefered tweaks.
(Even though I don't re-install on a weekly basis, I usually tweak things manually on more than one computer, and not "side-by-side".)

No one else wants thumbnails enabled by default?

^By thumbnails you mean "View->View as Icons"? I use it, but only because icons are larger and it is a bit easier to double click on them.
For advanced(?) file operations, I tend to use terminal and 'cp/mv/rm' ...

No. Edit>Preferences>Display>Show Thumbnails, I believe in Hydrogen it's set to Never. Set it to Always and go to your Pictures folder.

The most important one I think is the double-click setting, which if I am not mistaken is the default on Windows. People coming straight from Windows with not much experience will be driven nuts if the default is single-click to execute. And they'll be more likely to go elsewhere.

I think the defaults are fine, except for "Tree View" maybe. Everyone has their preference, and it is super-easy to change.

Oh, I see.
(And you can see how much I care about this setting )
I have it on 'Local files only', and for me it is OK. But, now I changed it to 'Never' and I think I will leave it on this.
However, for people with lot of pictures, 'Always' or 'Local files only' might be preferable.
What is default in vanilla Debian? I would leave it like it is configured in Debian.

I think it's on Local, but that's going from memory.

Double-click, toolbar, shortcuts, thumbnails for local files only.
EDIT: I once navigated to a folder that had >5000 image files in it (I had multiple similar images from different sources and I was slogging through it with Geeqie to find and delete visually identical ones); I had time to brew a pot of coffee while waiting for the thumbnails to load the the page to display.

There was no strong vote one way or the other, so let's just leave them the way they are ala #!.
