Wayland is the future. Whether it's any good remains to be seen. As a user, I can't see the advantage. Sub-par compositing, poor application support. Why?

Fair enough, but what are the chances that someone who wants to stay clear of it will be able to do so, at least in the near future, in the same way as they can with systemd?

That's the beauty of open source. A distro could keep X11 or outright fork it. Keeping a suite of applications available could be the hardest part.
