Bunsen-ify gentoo...on PowerPC?

Hey guys,

In the interest of masochism (apparently) I’ve decided to revive an old Mac mini with a g4 PowerPC processor. I’ve maxed out the RAM and installed a larger hard drive. It’s actually not a terrible little $20 computer now!

Anyway, I’d like to make it look and feel like bunsenlabs, or even archlabs if that proves to be easier.

Anyone want to help me figure this out? Alternatively, I could just use this thread like a progress blog if people are interested.

Thanks!

Re: Bunsen-ify gentoo...on PowerPC?

I have zero experience with Gentoo, but I have a partition that I'm deciding what to do with. big_smile

Did you get Gentoo installed? Is there an installation walk-through somewhere? (Sorry, I'm replying without doing any research.)

-edit, research- https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:A … stallation

Yeah, installation isn't so bad, as long as things build as expected.

I've already installed OSX 10.5.8, MorphOS 3.10, and have begun the Gentoo installation. I found an up-to-date stage3 tarball for my computer, which is a huge benefit. I've changed my "profile" from a basic one to a desktop, and am rebuilding required packages. So far, so good. It'll take me a day or two to get to a point where I can start building an actual desktop. Today will be kernel config day!

I don't have much experience with Gentoo either but if the look is all you are after feel free to grab our OB configs.  Install OB on Gentoo and just replace the configs etc.

Thanks Dobbie! Seems like a straightforward approach, and I really dig the archlabs look and feel, so this is probably the way to go for me.

Might be worth trying the BL theme too, its epic.

BL on a Mac sounds great. Wonder if anyone else has installed Linux on an older Mac.

Gentoo's ebuild system is similar to a PKGBUILD so the ArchLabs packages could probably be ported over quite easily:

Quick update - after several days (since my initial post) I have finally gotten a basic gentoo linux system fully bootstrapped, kernel built, all hardware seemingly recognized. Next step is xorg.

Yes, it took me several days. Compiling an OS on a G4, give me some credit!

Oh you get credit, I could install, boot and update Helium while reading that walk-through Wiki I linked and I'd still be reading it for the first time when the update was done. Masochist was an understatement!

Re: Bunsen-ify gentoo...on PowerPC?

There's something oddly satisfying about getting a Gentoo system up and running. Everything so far has been a struggle, but there's really no other 32 bit PPC distro available.

At the end of the day, I'm actually learning a lot about hardware, the kernel, and linux in general. Highly recommend if you have some vacation time saved up wink

Another good Gentoo based distro is Sabayon and it is possible to set up a minimal system that can be customized even with BL configs and wallpapers.

Have you actually had any time to run some programs in between all the compiling? monkey devil monkey

Is your machine on this list:

https://www.openbsd.org/macppc.html

OpenBSD's kernel can boot with ~15MiB of RAM, I don't think Gentoo can manage that...

Installation instructions here:

Hey, let's not get distracted with actually using the computer! Alas...no. tongue

Oh, neat. Well, turns out I have an entire other unused partition right now. I was planning to use it as free space to share among the current other operating systems but...this seems much more interesting.

Re: Bunsen-ify gentoo...on PowerPC?

Huzzah! I have xorg working. Finally. I had to wrestle with the radeon card for a bit, but we seem to be good to go at this point.

I'm using openbox. Currently it's barebones, I don't even have a terminal emulator, but it was exciting getting everything to work. Interestingly enough, trying to emerge terminator attempts to pull in a huge laundry list of dependencies...a lot of gnome stuff I'd prefer to avoid. I may just use urxvt instead.

Re: Bunsen-ify gentoo...on PowerPC?

I got terminator and tint2 to build...this is a slow process. smile Good news is that I'm filing bugs for everything that builds and works but had the ppc architecture masked, which so far is tint2 and terminator.

I plan to build openbox, tint2, terminator, urxvt, conky...what else would I need to install before I start theming?

The systray stuff: volumeicon, xfce4-power-manager & clipit (maybe not the last one though).

Check out https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-ne … kgs-norecs for a full package list.

The idea sounds good, but I don't have the experience of geetoo linux; The important reason witch I give up archlabs linux to continue using bunsenlabs linux is that my machine is 32-bit and does not support 64-bit.

@GJLee, if we at ArchLabs, had the manpower or resources to support 32bit machines we certainly would have.

Re: Bunsen-ify gentoo...on PowerPC?

Made progress!

I'm struggling to find (in the BL repos on github) where the icons are stored for tint2. I have errors opening tint2:

tint2: Loading icon theme cache...
Icon path not found in cache: theme = Paper-Bunsen, icon = /usr/share/images/bunsen/exit/light/poweroff.png, size = 0

Basically, searching the BL repos on github, I can't even find the poweroff.png that tint2 is looking for. Help appreciated. smile

/usr/share/images/bunsen/exit/light/poweroff.png is present on my system. It's installed by bunsen-exit: https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-exit
