[OUTDATED] BunsenLabs Helium RC1 ISO image

The BunsenLabs team is pleased to announce the availability of our RC1 ISO image for Helium, the next release (based on Debian 9).

As with our earlier images, please remember that once a user has been created and their home directory populated with our desktop configuration files then further package upgrades will not change these and any new practices will have to be merged manually by comparing the files in /usr/share/bunsen/skel/

Thanks for testing!

That's gonna be coming soon as RC releases are usually the last before the final. A good idea to test RC releases so that any more bugs can be found and squashed before final release smile

Not long now! smile

If we encounter no further problems with this image then we can proceed with the release.

Re: [OUTDATED] BunsenLabs Helium RC1 ISO image

I've now tested the (ncurses) installer and it works very well and very quickly, the correct GRUB parameters are suggested if GRUB installation is refused in non-UEFI mode.

The desktop was correctly configured after an initial console-only login, I still haven't even tried LightDM and probably never will big_smile

Minor issue: the conky configuration is not restored by BLOB, any sample setup that is selected lacks the conky hmm

I will investigate this some more but it's not really critical (IMO).

Also, URxvt.letterSpace in ~/.Xresources is wrong and should be -1 (not -2), certain terminal glyphs are replaced with boxes with the current configuration:

2018-04-22-112519_175x24_scrot.png

With this message:

urxvt: unable to calculate font width for 'DejaVu Sans Mono:slant=0:weight=100:pixelsize=16:antialias=False:autohint=True:minspace=True', ignoring.

With URxvt.letterSpace:-1 we see:

2018-04-22-112913_192x23_scrot.png

And no error messages glasses

Re: [OUTDATED] BunsenLabs Helium RC1 ISO image

Also, if the Helium_Flatish_Grey theme is selected in BLOB then bl-exit still has the green tint despite [style] being set as grey.rc in /usr/share/bunsen/utilities/blob/Helium_Flatish_Grey/bl-exitrc

The bl-exit script is now 813 lines long so I don't even know where to start with that one hmm

EDIT: or it could be a problem with BLOB, not sure really.

^ Try to set the style  to grey.rc in ~/.config/bl-exit/bl-exitrc. If it works fails there, then it will be a problem with bl-exit and I will look into it. If not, then it is likely a problem with BLOB.

OK, not sure how to do that but I tried this:

mkdir -p ~/.config/bl-exit
echo -e '[style]\ndir = styles\nrcfile = grey.rc' > ~/.config/bl-exit/bl-exitrc

Now `bl-exit` shows the traditional, non-graphical dialogue box, is that the expected result?

EDIT: no, this is a problem with my BLOB theme, I think, sorry about that.

EDIT2: OK, looks like my Helium_Flatish_Grey BLOB theme has the wrong bl-exit theme but the configuration file totally befuddles me cry

If anybody else could have a look and tell me how to make it not-green that would be fantastic:

https://github.com/BunsenLabs/bunsen-ut … /bl-exitrc

Thanks!

The next variant will abstract the styles stuff away into a straight ini styled config file that I believe will make things a bit simpler for us. I promise to finish the packaging for the next version soon. I have just been in a crash course with devOps for my new job the past couple of weeks. The good news is that I finally figured out the setup. However, I still have a few things left to do on the backend to get the environment fully functional.

I can't confirm this. They all work fine for me.
Anyway, if there is a bug in BLOB it can be fixed post-release by an upgrade to bunsen-utilities, so as you say, not too critical.

Also, URxvt.letterSpace in ~/.Xresources is wrong and should be -1 (not -2)

I think that judgement - "is wrong" -  might be a bit premature.

On my test system, with the default "Inconsolata" font chosen as the alias for Monospace, I get no errors at -2 or even with -3. Taken up to -4 then glyphs are squashed together and almost impossible to read (not boxes though) and a similar set of error messages to yours appears. If I try a different font, eg DejaVu Sans Mono, then even -4 is accepted! (DejaVu is wider than Inconsolata.) So it seems to depend on the choice of font. I'll do a comparison on my laptop too.

We spent some considerable time tinkering with the Terminator and urxvt settings to get the two windows identical. Urxvt has always been strange about horizontal spacing, but at that time I think we agreed that -2 was just right. It gives a line of text in urxvt spaced out exactly the same as in Terminator.

Might there be something a bit unusual with your system graphics setup? Could it be to do with screen dpi?

If -2 and Inconsolata gives a copy of the Terminator text rendering in urxvt for most users, I would be inclined to keep that, since -1 really does look too stretched out (to me anyway), and - because urxvt measures its window size in characters not pixels - makes a rather too big window to boot. OTOH if a lot of modern displays will need -1 then, reluctantly, might have to change... (Of course urxvt is not the default terminal.)

I think this is my fault, sorry. I took out the non-standard configs from /etc/bl-exit a little while ago (at the suggestion of another dev), leaving only the default Helium green. I quite forgot that some BLOB themes used the Grey style.

I'll check BLOB and put back, for now, at least the styles that are used there.

Anyway, tknomanzr's new bl-exit will hit the cyberwaves very soon, so all this can be forgotten - we'll have new configs to play with. (That's one reason why bunsen-configs no longer ships user config files by default. They can be copied from /etc if needed and will soon become obsolete anyway.)

My scrot is with the stock font at the stock size.

I should have mentioned that I used the right-arrow character ("→", U+2192) to test this, which is activated with <AltGr>+i on my gb keyboard.

Also check the dashes in the man pages, they crap out as well.

But anyway, neither this nor my idiosyncratic BLOB issue (which I will re-investigate tonight) are release critical, as you say.

OK, with a copy/paste confirmed. Box and errors even at -2 with Inconsolata. With DejaVu Sans Mono, -2 and -3 are OK, not -4. But DSM needs more squashing because it's wider.

Also check the dashes in the man pages, they crap out as well.

With Inconsolata and -2, they look fine here. At -3, some places start to look funky, but no error messages.

Anyway, after everything's done here I'll get out the laptop, with a smaller display, and see how things look there.

Geany looks cool now (A lil green as it should).

a. Not sure about default line height thought (I think it is a bit crowded)?

p.s. Line-height suggestion (or maybe even 'line_height=2;2;' with the current font).

b. Perhaps 'Line Wrapping' could be on by default, it removes the annoying vertical scrollbar, that shows even with empty doc.

Re: [OUTDATED] BunsenLabs Helium RC1 ISO image

Superb work everyone. I had the beta running on my thinkpad x220 and loved it, now I've wiped Kubuntu from the desktop and installed RC1. It's flawless.

As a relative Linux noob (8 months in from mac) I've had great fun learning to customise things, not in the lazy way of point and click in a control panel but playing with config files and looking under the hood.

I've said it before but your beta releases (now RC) are more stable and polished than most other distro final releases.

Thanks to everyone at team BL.

Ditto for me on the exceptional quality of this RC1 iso!  I am running it currently as my main OS on my hp pavilion g6 laptop.

Thanks, Bunsenlabs team, for an exceptional Openbox experience!
