[DISREGARD] Looking for help in installing Owncloud client

Hi there everyone!

I've managed to get a server up and running and it's working with the Win client, Android and the web but I've hit a sticking point on the BL install.

First, I followed these directions provided here:

For Debian 8.0 run the following as root:

echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositori … ebian_8.0/ /' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/isv:ownCloud:desktop.list
apt-get update
apt-get install owncloud-client

You can add the repository key to apt. Keep in mind that the owner of the key may distribute updates, packages and repositories that your system will trust (more information). To add the key, run:

wget -nv https://download.opensuse.org/repositor … elease.key -O Release.key
apt-key add - < Re
lease.key
apt-get update

but the client continued failing to connect.  On the OC forums, someone mentioned that the version I was using was too old and to use the latest 2.4 version, so I downloaded the .deb provided for Debian 8 on the same page and tried to install it which resulted in:

dependency is not satisfiable libowncloudsync0

At which point I'm stuck.  I've DDGed the error but can't find a solution that works.

Could someone help me figure out how to resolve the issue and get it installed?

Thanks for your time!

They have a link for "Grab binary packages directly" which includes the .deb files as a direct download. Perhaps this method of installation may work better?

Re: [DISREGARD] Looking for help in installing Owncloud client

Why not use the version of owncloud-client that's already in Debian/BL repositories? https://packages.debian.org/owncloud-client

sudo apt install owncloud-client

Re: [DISREGARD] Looking for help in installing Owncloud client

Hi there guys and thanks very much for your help.

Clover, the binary download is what's giving me that error.

vin, I'm not sure how to go about doing that now that I've followed the instructions on the OC site.  When I try to install, I get the 170 but the OC documents state:

"Requires to use the latest desktop client version 2.3 or llater"

What do I need to do to roll back what I did when following their instructions above so I can get the latest installed?

Thanks!

Re: [DISREGARD] Looking for help in installing Owncloud client

Schwim, this is how you roll-back:

Clean up you installed packages:

sudo apt purge owncloud-client --auto-remove

Delete the repository files:

cd /etc/apt/sources.list.de/
sudo rm isv\:ownCloud\:desktop.list # Tab for autocompletion helps to select the correct file.

What Debian version are your running your client on? If it's Jessie you will have to get the version from software.opensuse.org running. Jessie only offers 2.2.4 at max.

Re: [DISREGARD] Looking for help in installing Owncloud client

I purged and did try to install the 2.4.1 from opensuse but I get the same error:

dependency is not satisfiable libowncloudsync0

I found the required version of  libowncloudsync0 on the debian site under the sid repos but when downloading and attempting to install, it just lists the next package that can't be satisfied.  I just don't know what else to do to get this running.

Just picking some dependencies out of the blue is not a good idea.
Again: What Debian version are your running your client on?

Vin, sorry for not answering earlier.  I'm running an up to date stock BL install.

You could try downloading the correct .deb package for the current version from the Debian jessie repositories:

https://deb.debian.org/debian/pool/main … _amd64.deb

Then use this command to downgrade the package version:

sudo dpkg --install --force-downgrade owncloud-client_1.7.0~beta1+really1.6.4+dfsg-1+deb8u1_amd64.deb

If APT complains about errors and dependencies then run this command afterwards:

sudo apt-get install -f

If you need a newer version of owncloud-client then try jessie-backports:

https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/

Re: [DISREGARD] Looking for help in installing Owncloud client

Hi there head and thanks a bunch for your help.  I was unable to duplicate your steps and end up with a working client.

I'm going to try going in another direction with this.  Since a lot of things I use are designed to work with the most popular distro, I'll try to get Ubu to work like BL so I can stop trying to shove square pegs through round holes.

Retiring this topic but thanks for all the help!

I mostly recommend using Docker for "appliance-like" applications like owncloud. You don't want to sink 8 hours into every security patch. Better to setup a container with some volumes for data that is easily redeployable, then just swap out the container for up- and downgrades.

Docker is better supported on Ubuntu than on Debian anyway, so I'd suggest you give it a look.
