Apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum.
I haven't played chess since high school so some... oh, I don't know if I count that high... 30+ years ago.
A friend asked me to teach her to play chess. I showed her the basic moves, and she walked away laughing that I thought she could remember all that. Whatever.
But it did spark an interest in that I realized I can't remember any of the strategy I knew.
So what I would like to do is install a simple chess game, where I can try to re-hone my skills. I've tried searching for one, but they inevitably start talking about chess engine backends, and my eyes glaze over and go... WTF!?
I have Slitaz in a virtual box, and it comes preinstalled with a chess game; the menu says nanochess, but when you launch it the window title is toledo chess, or maybe tuxedo chess. It seems to do what I want. But I can't find any of those three names in the Debian repository. And I'd rather not fire up a virtual machine just to play a game of chess.
So... any recommendation or pointers on what I would need to install on bunsenlab to be able to launch the program and play a simple game against the computer?
Thanks,
David

Thanks. Looks like xboard will do what I want.

A lot of Linux chess games are graphical interfaces to chess engines. My preferred combination is xboard GUI and stockfish chess engine.
A great way to play computer chess which I enjoy is via web UI @ https://lichess.org (you can get paired with a human player or play against the computer).

Debian have a chess metapackage:

^ will that install backend(s) and frontend(s) in one go and make them work ootb?
anyhow, i have xboard installed and remember fiddling with it (the backends) a while ago, but then just left it at the defaults and it works well enough.
in other words, just install a frontend, chances are it will Just Work (tm).

Oh yes, it basically installs everything chess-related in Debian
The only problem will be the profusion of chess programs on offer if an auto-generating menu system is employed
