Since root's messages have been arriving in my regular email client, I've been able to see (along with unattended-upgrades results) pretty much daily messages about my hard disk from the "smart daemon", like this, in March:
This message was generated by the smartd daemon running on:
host name: bunsen1
DNS domain: [Empty]The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:
Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 22 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
After some googling I thought the consensus was that as long as the number of unreadable sectors didn't increase then the disk might be OK a bit longer.
Well, I continued to get the messages, but every time the number was 22. Until last Friday when it was down to 19. Hmm...
Then, yesterday and today it was down to six unreadable sectors.
What's happening to my disk?
Is the smart daemon smart enough to actually fix it?

Possibly relevant serverfault post?

^Thanks, that does look relevant.
