The would Richard M Stallman hate you thread. :D

No matter what you do, kinda get the feeling the guy would chastise you/me for something, no matter what anyone does. You just have to accept it and get on with life the best way ya know how ... I guess. Ok joking have MUCHO respecto for RMS but this topic is amusing so here goes.

Ok had to do it, since it crossed the frothy sea of babble that tends to pass for a brain in ma head. Has been done before but is somewhat entertaining so why not in this forum too ? The post your vrms output thread, to show how many proprietary/contrib packages you've got installed on your gnu/Linux goodness. To install it "sudo apt-get install vrms", to run it "sudo vrms". It'll tell you all about this and even list which proprietary and contrib packages you've got installed on your OS's.

A hybridized BL-Hydrogen/Stretch OS.

28 non-free packages, 2.3% of 1242 installed packages.
6 contrib packages, 0.5% of 1242 installed packages.

My main OS,

7 non-free packages, 0.5% of 1403 installed packages.
5 contrib packages, 0.4% of 1403 installed packages.

empty@testbed:~ $ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on testbed! rms would be proud.
empty@testbed:~ $

*whispers* I copy the (non-free) iwlwifi firmware for my wireless card over from my Arch box to hide it from APT and keep (v)RMS happy, please don't tell him.

Re: The would Richard M Stallman hate you thread. :D

^ I don't like to be the bearer of bad news Hoas but RMS PM'ed to tell me, to tell you, he hates you. He must have something like Google alerts running to monitor for mentions of hiz holy name or summin. Also don't take it hard, he also informed me that he hates me too.

I just told him without Linus Torvalds and the Linux kernel he'd still be developing Hurd, reasonably enough to which he told me, after saying that he hates me x2, more than double the amount he originally did before I said such. big_smile

Dang it, as usual I was too busy babbling like an id10t to process info ! You scored a perfect 10 HOAS !!! Whaaaaa ? Hmmm in light of this, am sure RMS would reconsider or at least reduce any hatred he may bare towards you fellow nixer. Ok ... all dorking aside, time to do something, anything ... I can at least fool myself into classifying as "productive." tongue

Oops, also all kidding aside VlRMS! and GNUUUUUUUUUUUUU NOT UNIXXXXXXXX ! Really do bet the guy's a fricken genius, heard he's weird as a mofo but who isn't to some degree ?

✓ nili@ ~ $ sudo vrms
Non-free packages installed on my system

rar Archiver for .rar files
unrar Unarchiver for .rar files (non-free version)

2 non-free packages, 0.5% of 428 installed packages.
✓ nili@ ~ $

I wan't rar and unrar so i don't care if i ignored the rules of non-free for those apps.

Well, I try to keep all the "unclean" software (steam, wine, flashplayer, etc) quarantined in my Arch box and keep the Debian systems as free (as in speech) as possible.

In my experience the non-free software tends to be of lower quality anyway [1] and so I would probably still use the open alternatives even if I didn't strongly agree with the political teachings of Mr. Stallman.

I have to say though that I do tend to prefer BSD-licenced userspace tools over the GNU alternatives because the latter tend to be quite bloated and buggy compared to the competition and pragmatism usually wins out there so I use (for example) mksh instead of bash and always have the BSD utilities along with plan9port accessible in my $PATH.

[1] See http://www.catb.org/esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/ for an explanation as to why this might be the case.

I am also reminded of the quote:

viro wrote:

All software sucks, be it open-source [or] proprietary. The only question is what can be done with particular instance of suckage, and that’s where having the source matters.

Re: The would Richard M Stallman hate you thread. :D

@Nili that's one lean n mean gnu/Nix OS you've got there fellow nixer. I'd say RMS would bestow his blessing upon you and hey, he even might. Right after telling you how rar was hand coded by Satan himself anyway. big_smile

@Hoas, you're cheating and ya can't have it both ways. Just saying, if you deeply believe in the teachings of hiz high and exalted RMS, you can't keep one OS/system open source and have another packed with plenty proprietary, simply doesn't work that way ma friend. I fear an incoming IM from Mr. Stallman about this. Don't worry I got a plan. I'll just keep repeating Linux w/o prepending gnu to it over and over, this will surely distract, possibly discombobulate him to the point where we've got enough time to run. big_smile

Really no worries, point of this dorkish thread is amusement. Already posted the output of my Os's neither of them fully open source and actually have been spending majority of time using the hybrid install. Like them both very much, main OS is still lighter/faster etc. Not my place to judge, everybody knows that's RMS's job and we are all GUILTY !!!! Gnuuuuu's not Unixxxxx + it's friggin GNU/Linux, that's right all caps in GNU !!!

In order to help solve one of life's greatest mysteries Richard Stallman was asked ....

What came first, the chicken or the egg ? To which he replied simply, ...

Screw all of that GNU did, GNUUUUUUUUU !

RMS wouldn't like me using Doom 1, Doom 2, Diablo 2, Starcraft 1, Alpha Centauri, Riven, Steam, and Borderlands 2

Re: The would Richard M Stallman hate you thread. :D

^Lmao big_smile Hmmmm probably not but then he's never played them or might view it differently. Also have less time on his hands to rant about proprietary software. Ah ... much respect for RMS but anyone whose seen him in action is likely to say he needs to lighten up a bit.

Vll! and VlRMS! smile

PS, Also can't help but wonder exactly how many geeks in the world have a 100% open source only computer running ? Can't think of any way to ever determine this or where to find anything that'd be accurate on that topic but it's funny ( and not ) to see various interviews where they say "We're here with Richard Stallman blahblahblah, his laptop froze 1/2 way through the interview but luckily started working again" and similar type junk.

YEEHAA, sudosatirical is still at it!

“I’m just relieved, that no matter what happens, I’m no longer connected to a bunch of programs that I can’t even inspect the source code of,” he told reporters, moments before flat-lining.

I've been supporting proprietary networking and storage appliances for a living for 5+ years now. So I'm pretty sure I would be pretty far up on his sh*t list.

Lol Mynis, yep but paying the bills is mandatory so being on RMS's shatlist will have to take a backseat.
